New Mac users are like reformed smokers - even more zealous than those who never smoked/used Windows...

    Anyway, welcome, TH :)

Actually, reformed smokers are mild compared to new mac users. At work they think I'm working sales for Mr. Jobs.

two mac laptops in our house. Great.

Same as. Converted by sister an (An architect) and her bf (photographer). Macbook- got in in Apple Store 5th Ave with DVD burner, loving it. Plus my iTouch, graduated from iPod Video which graduated from a nano. Loving Mac's enthusiasm for third party applications, downloaded quite a few.

Worried about possible viruses though, what's the story re Viruses on Mac?

Right now, there's nothing in the wild, but don't think that it'll never happen, because it probably will one day.

However, the Mac OS has more designed-in security, which means that it will be harder for viruses to spread as they do on Windows, installing themselves without your knowledge.

With the Mac OS, installations and running scripts etc needs more user-input, so this means that clever social engineering (tricking people) will be the way viruses will spread, but there is no way that social engineering can enable viruses to spread as far and wide as as they have in Windows.

As far as I know the current count on viruses for Macs is zero.
But - if you open MS word or excel documents, beware of the possibility of macros. I don't think they'll hit you, but could harm pc users you forward to.

You should be more worried about (cross-platform) browser exploits & "social engineering"/phishing scams.

There are some (possible) exploits that utilise Quicktime; but they appear to be unused or patched quickly.
