I am currently considering joining a club in the South Wicklow/North Wexford area. I have looked at the memberships for local clubs and am not gonna go down paying €8k-€10k to join anywhere, my wife would shoot me. I have seen that Glenmalure GC have share membership offer of €3k plus €1k p.a. subs, is anyone familiar with this club or does anyone have any other clubs in the area that they would recommend.

I can't be of much help but...

I assume you've checked out the Courtowns, Seafields and European Clubs etc and these are all in the 8k+ bracket? Where did you get your figures from? If you got your info casually, even from a member, I'd recommend giving the club a call themselves. They'll most likely have a General Manager who'll be in charge of membership sales and you could be surprised at some of the options that might be available.

Eg: my own club (though not in your area) is 12k to join. You might immediately cross it off but if you enquire, they'd tell you it's possible to lease full membership rights for 1,700 pa. Not a bad way to start and see how you go.

Some of the actual joining fees may also be lower than people have told you they are - you just don't know until you check it out.

One more point, I've never heard of Glenamalure and it could be great for all I know, but I would say beware of "budget" golf courses. While 8k may be a huge amount to spend on a golf club, 2k is also a huge amount to spend on a crappy course!

I'm not saying SPLASH OUT just because I think it's worth it, I'm saying if you have 2k or 3k to spend on golf per year you'd be better off joining a very cheap club for 300 quid just to get a h'cap - play there a few times a year and spend the rest of your annual budget in 20/30/40 euro batches playing great courses in open days and casual green fees with friends.

I know you said that you dont want to spend 8-10k on joinig fee's but,
There is a new course opening in Bunclody at the end of the summer, Its around €7500, but that is for a share, which is redeemable.

    http://www.bunclodygfc.ie/

I know a few involved in it and was down there last weekend walking it, from what I can see, its going to be fantastic.
It will be long, around 7400 yards.
The clubhouse is nearly finished and it looking great.

From what I hear, the subs will be around the 1k mark per year.

It was the hardest thing for me not to join, but I am already a member of a good club, which I cant give up,for other reasons, and as Im only in my mid to late 20's cant justify having two memberships.
And the old man joined it, so will get to play it fairly regularly.

But if you want more information, PM me and I will get it too you.

There are around 300 memberships sold already, and they are aiming for 650ish.

Have a think about it. But it is a 6months to a year away so maybe it wont suit.

A couple of years back I was looking for the same and Seafields was 19K for a share. Courtown still has a long waiting list and the Eurpoean is pricey too. I ended up getting a really top quality course/County Club/Hotel on the Wexford/Carlow boarder for 800 euro a year with NO sign up fee...This is FULL membership and includes GUI fee......Hang around for another couple of months and there will be more competitive prices, clubs are in trouble!
