Im being forced by the band to sort out my bass amp situation as we are are going to try sort out an EP in the next 3 months. I called up waltons and asked for a price on the SVT CL and they quoted 2500 followed by, the best we can do is 2k...

    *ahem* fo *ahem*

From america it works out at 1070 euro (1600 for the SVT VR), then theres shipping which for arguements sake we will say is another 300.

So 1400 (1900 for the vr) overall to get it over here. Grand. One thing that im worried about is the warrenty..

Since waltons are the main ampeg wholesaler in ireland(i think) does that mean that they are obliged to take my amp onboard for repair to send back to ampeg if it breaks?

If not.. and something went wrong with it how would i go about getting it fixed within my warrenty?

    Hi,
if i were you i would also consider the voltage difference, you'll probably end up having to get a us/uk adaptor to convert the US 110v to UK220v
Waltons is the irish distributor for ampeg/crate they won't take back or assure the warranty for something that they didn't brought into the country, the warranty will be the responsability of the seller.
don't forget that you'll have to pay duty on that equipment that's another 100 to 300 euros depending on the value of your amp.
    hope that helps.

I wouldn't buy a new Ampeg tbh, they're now made in China. They were also made in Vietnam recently (nicknamed Vietnampeg's :D). Parts have obviously changed as a result (due to supply) and the quality isn't the same as when they were made in the US. I know of a few people over on the Harmony Central Bass Forums that have had ongoing problems with the new Ampeg's.

Go for something like an EBS, Genz Benz, or maybe a Traynor (if you can get your hands on one).

Music maker have an EBS Fafner head in stock. They're supposed to be the dogs b0ll0cks! Tube preamp and SS power with a load of other cool features, 600w power also. :pac:

I'm getting a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0, similar features to the Fafner, probably a lot cheaper and a hell of a lot smaller. It's about the same size as a hardback Stephen King novel I have at home. It'll work anywhere in the world also (switchable power) just need a little adapter for the plug :) so you can buy one from the US if you want.

theres some selling this on buyandsell.ie:
    EBS Bass Amp :HD 350 Head:350 watts:The Marcus Miller Head:Never Gigged:FlightCased....800euro

    and then there is a
SWR Goliath III Bass Cab 700W 4X10 (New) €999

provided they are both in good nick, that is plenty of 'kabooom' for under 2k

    Hi,

It does not state on Ampegs site if you have to return the head to the point of purchase. I would take it as given that you must. Any stuff i've bought from the USA|(MusicMan & Crown Amps) must be serviced there if your claiming under the warranty.

PM for my contact in Ampeg and you can ask him anything Ampeg related. He is very good at getting back to you.

Ampegs warranty is transferable to a new owner, as long as you can provide the original receipt. Which is always good for its re-sale value. Its also a 5 year warranty.

I would say Waltons would laugh you out of the shop if you brought your USA purchased head in for a warrant repair.

I managed to get a SVT4 last month for Waltons, there last USA made one, but I got it for the new reduced price, sweet. As mentioned my JR, there has been some questions ask of the new Vietnampegs range. But, Ampeg have sent out quality control people from the USA to keep a eye on things. Unlike most companies that simple do not do this. This is said to have improved things. Also, there adding features onto the range of heads like through AC and other things etc.

From using the amp so far, they do not sound great with 8ohm cabs at all. So bear that in mind when your getting you head. For maximum sound, as said here before a 8x10 will do that head justice or a good 4ohm. Also, being all tube it must be run with a cab.

I would'nt rate EBS or SWR, but thats just me.

I would 2nd Genz Benz's gear. There cabs are great and the make some great heads.

My only negative about the Ampeg SVT CL is the weight. Its a monster to lift and thats not taking in a flight case for it. I guess thats the price you pay for that all tube head. Hope you band mates are going to give you hand lift these things, seeing there making you upgrade...

    Why a SVT CL??

try and buy a second hand USA ampeg, don't worry about the warranty.... they are pretty bullet-proof in terms of reliability.
