I recently started playing a jaguar after a few years playing a Gibson SG.
I find however that the 10 gauge I use (as I did with the Gibson) feel more like 9's and I don't have the same control over them as with the SG. I gonna try 11's but has anyone else noticed this with Jaguars?

    hi

    i have a jazzmaster,

the reason your strings feel lighter
is because of the lenght of string behind the bridge

try 11's, they are much better that 10's (on my JM anyway)
sound way better, better tuning stability etc
and i would imagine its the same on the jag

they wont feel like 10's (i have 10's on an lp and a tele)
still a little heavier feel but well worth it for the sound

no, the reason the strings feel lighter is because it's a shorter scale guitar

you can add all the length in the world behind the bridge or the nut, it doesn't change the scale length of the guitar.

The jaguar is a 24 inch guitar, you need .011s really.
i personally would use 12s on a jag.

ok, makes sense, i have been educated!

but, why does everyone say that 11's dont feel
as tight on a jm as they would on a strat for example
I always thought it was due to the extra string lenght

to be honest all the advice i have read on jazzmasters
says to use 11's, so i did and was happy with the difference
but i didnt read into it too much

Right but Jaguars are shorter scale and a different feel to Jazzmasters.

    they're the same tension.

they may feel slightly different because there's different amount of resistance on the bridge when you bend, but for notes that you don't bend, any difference you feel in standard tuning is your imagination or dependent on the setup of the guitar - it physically isn't possible to have different tension and the same note and the same gauge wire

    form1.gif

f = fundamental frequency (the pitch you hear)
L = length of the string
    T = tension
P = string mass/unit length, number of kg per metre of string

Because the strat has a 25.5" scale lenth. ;)

so does a jazzmaster, which is what he's talking about

    strat/tele/jazzy = 25.5 inches
    jag/mustang = 24 inches
    duo-sonic/musicmaster = 22.5 inches

Also a guitar with a floating trem will feel slightly looser than a hardtail esp when bending a string.
