http://www.drnatura.com/picture_gallery.html scroll down for the pics *shudder*

friend sent me this like ( dont ask, she seems to spend her life googling weird ****... quite literally it seems this time )

and i was wondering does this kind of stuff *actually* happen, or is it caused by the product to make it look like its working? (my cynical side talking)

or is it a natural and fairly harmless phenomenon?

Yes, this type of thing can and does happen. In fact, you'd be surprised at jyst how inneficient the gastrointestinal tract is. For example, if you eat a lot of meat (and not so much fibre), some of that meat can become 'stuck' in your gut, where it can remain for years. If you want a good, healthy gut, drink a good bit of water, cut down on meat, and start eating more fruit & vegetables.

Try entering the words Colonix and Scam into Google. The consensus seems to be that this stuff itself is what is making these weird looking 'stools'. If you pop it into water it turns into a hard gelatinous substance which is what you're excreting to make you think it was in your gut all along.

Those stools are caused by the mixtures contained in the products that you take to 'cleanse' your colon. Though I must say it makes for amazing advertising, even if it is a crock of ****.

    couldn't resist

It's just the old victorian idea that "death begins in the colon" auto poisoning lark dressed up in new clothes. Dr Kellog and the like were big for this stuff. That and masturbation causing weakness etc. They just loved their colonics and enemas. The naturapath(sp) health types love this stuff.

Now maybe I'm wrong and better medical counsel will be along to correct me, but if food actually putrefied in the gut the way these guys claim I would suspect that you would be hospitalised in short order with some sort of toxic shock?

It's the usual thing, a good diet high in nutrients and fibre and low in the bad stuff is very very good for you, but they take that obvious truth and run with it. It's kinda like the whole vitamin supplement angle. Vitamins are required by the body and are part of a healthy diet so taking a mob of them is obviously going to be better. Sadly it's not.

Add in the almost daily scientific reports about what may be good for you or bad for you (which seems to vary quite a bit) and no wonder some are confused in fairness. Further add in many peoples lack of basic scientific knowledge and you can see where they get their adherents.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    Thanks for asking this question.

I was wondering exactly the same thing after reading the drnatura.com site. You really need a strong stomach to look at those pictures of what is supposed to be excreted.

So, the general consensus is to steer clear of this product?

Wibbs pretty much hits the nail on the head. Yet again, this is quackery of the highest order.

No scientific evidence to back it up, nothing verifiable but some yucky pictures and most likely fabricated testimonials.

A variation on the snake oil routines of the Wild West. People worry so much about not taking anything from the big bad pharma companies, but yet they'll buy into this crock. Steer a wide wide berth from anything that claims to be a wonder cure, without being able to properly back it up.

Eat well, drink plenty of water and take some excercise on a regualr basis. Don't waste your money or risj your health.
