Ireland well placed to meet gas demand
    Friday, 9 May 2008 15:51

Bord Gáis has said Ireland is well placed to meet future gas demand.

Today Bord Gáis Networks published its first annual seven-year forecast of the demand for natural gas, sources of supply and infrastructure requirements.

Bord Gáis says it expects gas demand to grow at 3% per year to 2013, due mainly to increasing demand from the power generation sector. Natural gas currently makes up about 25% of Ireland's primary energy mix, a share that is in line with the EU average.

The outlook for secure supply is positive in the short to medium term, given the expected increase in new sources of supply from Corrib and Shannon LNG, secure interconnection with the UK and access to its diverse sources of gas, the report says.

The existing transmission system has sufficient capacity to meet current and future demand, according to Bord Gáis. Currently, over 90% of Ireland's gas is sourced from Great Britain with the remainder from indigenous sources, including the Kinsale and Seven Heads gas fields.

its funny given that the UK is worried about gas supplies, that "we" are happy with a connection to the UK

Where could I read about the terms of the Corrib Gas field agreement between Shell and the Irish Government?

From what I heard from a guy who was working during the sonar mapping, the area got/was to get divided up into a grid, with every second square going to Ireland.

Another person I spoke to recently said that the EU explicitly forbade Ireland from exploiting the resource ourselves, instead mandating that a private entity must be used.

What happens when Russia/Ukraine decide to charge Europe more, the pipeline to Scotland ruptures/gets sabotaged or shutoff, or we get forgotten in the coming energy fiasco?

As for generation, why don't we have meters that can go backwards if a customer is a net contributer to the grid?

For gas!, are you proposing that we introduce baked beans to the diet. :D

As for maintaining supply, the best way would be to restrict new connections NOW, no point in increasing consumption too rapidly as we will become too dependant on external supplies.

Better to remain with a relativly small number of consumers that it may be possible to supply internally for longer.
