As far as I am aware, Bluetooth on the iPhone can only be connected to other apple devices!

Incorrect. You should be able to connect it (I had a CK-7W that worked fine). It works for voice only. You can't use any features like contacts, voice dialling etc.

Not true. Have it paired with my Garmin 710. Can see caller ID and browse phone book as expected.

Any iPhone with version 1.1.4 firmware will support, Phonebook Transfer,Last calls/missed/dialled, will show phone name/network operator/battery status.

Text messaging via bluetooth is not as yet supported but will be in the future possibly in Firmware 2.0 + with the opening up of the bluetooth stack and more profiles being enabled.

I use the Nokia CK-15w and the Garmin Nuvi 770 and it works flawlessly.

Also point to note anyone using a garmin with bluetooth, do not uprgade the bluetooth firmware to 3.1 as it will kill the bluetooth connection use either 2.4 or 2.8 as the functionality is the same and sound is perfect.

Bluetooth is a set of protocol's on how radio transmissions are used not software. It can not be customised to just accept one companies bluetooth products and not another. The only difference is what protocols are implemented with the bluetooth circuits in your handset.

Well in the case of the iphone, it's bluetooth stack is quite comprehensive but the functionality is restricted, for using with the likes of a garmin opp server etc needs to be enabled within the code, how I dunno but I believe there are currently people with the sdk for 2.0 beta looking at this.
