Anybody ever highlighted their own hair at home?! Due to my perennial disappointment with hairdressers I have decided to embark on ruining my hair myself -anyone got any advice on what highlighting kits are best? Was looking at at a Wella one but this is unchartered territory so any tips/recommendations would be muchos appreciated. Ta!

Used to always do my own in the days when I couldn't afford hairdressers. My biggest tip would be to get someone, sister or friend of whatever, to do it for you. You obviously can't see the top of your own head and so the chances of missing bits are huge!

I used a loriel one before i think.it was a red box neway was actually very good it has the base hair colour and highlights so you know they'll match...might use it again actually!

I used a loreal blonde hightlighting kit to do my hair recently
I got my sister to do it and it turned out quite natural she is good and precise at doing hair though so i trusted her but I've gotten tons of compliments so it was worth it :D

I've done my own lots of times, it's grand to do it in between trips to the hairdressers but if I wouldn't recommend doing it all the time as the colour builds up on the lengths and it can look a bit much. I'm not sure of the brand I used to use, I think it was Wella, anyway the box is light blue with a REALLY old fashioned picture of a woman with short hair, but don't let that put you off. Definitely get someone to help you though, especially if you want highlights all over, it's a pain in the arse trying to pull strands of hair through a little hole at the back of your head :p

Yep, I've used the Wella one too (when putting in coloured streaks I need to lighten my hair so the colours would take, as I have very dark brown hair) it works grand.

Do get someone to help though as others have said, it's impossible to do the back of your head yourself. Be careful when re-highlighting though to not put too much on the previously highlighted hair, try to stick to just the roots, as the peroxide will weaken your hair, same as getting it done in a hairdressers would.

Ive used the wella one with the real 1980's looking woman on the front several times. However I had to switch to the Loreal one when it became hard to match up the roots. The loreal kits are 50% off in hickeys at the mo (€10).

If you are feeling nervous about it get a friend you trust to help out with the back of it especially.

Also if you are using the wella kit I found it best not to bother with the shower cap thing that came with it and just kind of brushed on the streaks (as seen in extreme makeover!). Its hard to get the cap down to the v. root of the hair and also easier to see where you are putting the streaks. If you tie your hair back in a pony tail keep this in mind and keep the streaks slightly further back from your hairline as the roots wont be so obvious then!

    Good luck!
