Finding a job related to art

hi..... i have no "work" or "college" experience in relation to art. for fear of sounding modest, i have always been exceptional at art, and i think i could draw almost anything. i have only encountered 1 person in my past( im 21) who i think is more talented than i.

this isnt about how great i am however( im not cocky, really). im just curious. seeing as the only real qualification type experience i have in art is the leaving cert, and countless drawings i have done....... does anyone know how i could use this to make some money at the mo? like somewhere where sketches can make you some money.... maybe working as a someone who draws for animated films, etc.? or do all of these require qualifications or experience?

im just finished up college now, and am not sure where i want to go next. i kind of just want to try something different maybe, so this is an option.

i appreciate any responses. thanks in advance,

    ian.

You do realise that, after an opening salvo like that, you're gonna have to put SOMETHING up for us to see...? That or you'll look like a chicken.

In answer to your first question: you have NO chance of getting into animation without qualification. And they are serious. Being able to draw is one thing, committing yourself to an long-term animation project where you will literally have to churn out thousands of top notch drawings and paintings is another.

In answer to the rest of your questions: look around the commercial galleries of wherever you live. You'll encounter plenty of work better than yours. You'll also get a good idea of what sells and what doesn't.

Get a website going, if you haven't already. Try Devianart - click on the link in my sig, set up your own account. It's free. Get a good (and comprehensive) portfolio together and some photos of your best finished pieces and contact advertising agencies, illustrators and publishers who seem to work in the same genre as you.

Alternatively, start your own business. Portrature is popular. For paintings, get a space in Stephen's Green / Merrion Square. If you're good, you'll sell. If you're not, you won't.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

i will put up something if you want..... although im sure it wont be as good after my intro. lol. the human mind, eh?

thanks for the responses. i will have a lok at the link on your sig.

thats the thing though. i dont know who to contact about that sort of stuff. i looked in jobs yesterday, and googled a good bit, but couldnt find what i was looking for.

my comfort zone lies in pure sketching. i havent alot of experience painting, but after the 4 or 5 i have done for the leaving cert, by the 5th one( the project itself), i think it turned out very well.

Put it up! Need to see it, man!

You won't find many art jobs advertised, and those that are will required experience. It's all down to self-promotion beyond that. Another idea is to try a few local cafes and coffee shops that do artists work. You can still get sketches/pencil renderings framed and hanged - plenty of people do.

there is a heck of alot more to animation then being able to draw - few studios in ireland are doing hand drawn animation anymore so a very high working knowledge of flash, maya, animo, toon boom and other programs would be needed as well as working knowlegde of how a studio works - the last production we had had over 80 people working on it and everyone needs to know who is doing what for everything to run correctly and line producers have very little time for people who don't know whats going on.

You would be expected to have either studied animation [have a demo reel and take a style test] or gained experience at a studio but its very hard to get the later as most studios do not have the time to trian in people as deadlines are very tight, the vast majority of animation work in ireland is commerical work with very quick trun around times. At the studio I'm currently working at we do take on interns every now and again but its usually animation students during the summer break and they aren't paid.

you could take a look at the creativeireland.com site as they have a job listing and a forum with working professionals in illustration, graphic design, and animation that are very good for giving feedback on work. If your serious about getting work in some area of the arts you would need to get decent portfilio together and a web portfilio.

    .

As a matter of interest, if you're that good, why didn't you apply for an art or design related course in college?

Being a commercial self employed artist is the same as running any other business.
You will have to be talented as an artist.
And also have management, sales skills.
Also necessary is above average determination, and above average self dicipline, to apply the above in the face of getting no results for long periods without losing heart or slacking off.

If you have all that you will be fine. If you dont - start developing the skills necessary ... consider going on a selling course first, teno beef up on the other skills as necessary.

Then take your portfolio work and visit all public places and the people who control them ... filling stations, hotels, train stations, post offices, etc. Ask for permission to put up sketches for sale on a 50:50 split the revenues basis, saying they cant lose. Maybe 2% of the visits will result in a half hearted acceptance.
Some will keep the money and break the deal. Some sketches will simply "disappear". That leaves one good one and then you have made a beginning.
Then do it again and you are running your own artists career!
