If a car has high mileage is it required to use a thicker oil...
Mothers car is Rover 75 1.8 with 120k miles on the clock. Instead of using
magnatec I want to use Shell Helix super 15w40, is that ok to use or should I just keep to using magnatec 10w40? I use Shell oils on all our cars at the house except the 75 and they run a dream.

    Thanks

    Not really.

Check the required oil specs in the owners manual, if you still have it. Alernatively, talk to a Rover dealer/specialist.

Are you experiencing any specific problem(s)?

No problems at all, I just dont think it is required to use an over priced oil on this car. Also with the higher mileage on it, it's
probably not needed to continue using syntethics. Maybe I'm very wrong there :P

If you've no problems and the car has proven reliable over the 120k, then I'd be inclined to leave well enough alone and carry on with the semi synthetic. That's just my opinion.......

I asked my local motor factors about oil for my A6 and he had 10W listed but I told him it was drinking a little and he told me that 15W was listed for my car in their catalogue for "extra protection", I think he said.
