Customised/Specialised Wedges ??

I hear these are getting more common, and more and more sets of clubs are being sold without wedges as many people like to pick their wedges separately.

I have to say that I'm very happy with the PW and SW that came with my iorns and I have never thought about getting different ones.

That said I would be interested to hear about anyone that has ditched the traditional PW & SW for specialised wedges and what the difference these clubs made to their game ??.

    Cheers

I changed mine last year, and am very glad I did.
Swapped out the standard ping i3 PW, SW and LW and got myself Titleist Vokeys, 48, 54 and 60. With the 54 and 60 spin milled.
The difference in control and feel on the ball is brilliant.
Mind you, the spin milled really do take chunks out of the ball(pro v1)!!

The main reason I changed was to get a consistant gap between the clubs, which is now 6 degs, but it was i think 47 deg, 56 deg and 60 deg in the pings. With my wedge going too far and the sand wedge not far enough!

Most sets of clubs dont include a 3 or 4 iron any more either.

Here's a previous thread on this topic.

I still have the same wedge set up as I did last year but I am thinking of trading out my regular PW for a titleist vokey wedge as I really like the 60 degree one I have.

    Cheers fellas, very interesting.
A gap wedge sounds like something I could use.
Do you know if Ping make them for their G-10 range ??

Would recommend a third wedge allright, but there should be no need to ditch the wedges if your set already has them.
Which to get depends on the set you have:
    - if the wedge and swedge are already close, then you could benefit from a 58 - 60 deg wedge with little bounce.
    - if there is a big gap between the wedge and swedge, then a gap one, probably 50-52 deg, could fill in nicely.

I dont put much mass on 'tour grinds', 'spin milled' etc which are just marketing speak to get you to swap wedges you have for new 'specialised' ones.

Something similar to all the above.

    I have a set of TaylorMade RAC's and I use the 50, 54 & 58 degree Callaway X-Tour Vintage Wedges, which I find excellent.

Also, depending on the wedge model you have, you can get the lofts adjusted.
I have a 52 degree gap wedge which my fitter set to 53 degrees to even the spread between my pitching wedge and my 60 degree lob.
Titleist and cleveland wedges should be easily adjustable (these ones I know about)... others may vary.

The vokey 'spin milled' have a great feel IMO
I've seen the results on a proV1 from a callaway x-tour wedge with 'mack daddy' grooves and believe me that it's not just marketing (although it was in the hands of a talented player - low handicapper in barton cup from rosslare). He got backspin from a 40 yard pitch to 1 ft, but you'd want to be pretty flush to afford the golf balls :)
