Taking a bike on a plane - Packaging advice/rules?

I'm moving to Lyon next month and want to take my bike with me.

As I'm moving there and will need to get as much baggage as possible I'm probably flying Aer Lingus, rather than Ryanair to Grenoble.

I've contacted Aer Lingus's contact center about taking a bike but their answer is a little fudged:

-Just wrap the bike in craft paper and then you dont have to disassemble it at all. If you don't wrap it then they will probably disassemble it at the airport to fit it in their box! Eh...

Has anyone taken a bike on a plane recently? Aer Lingus or Ryanair - in case I change my mind!

I have friends working in a bike shop so I can get one of the factory-pack boxes that bikes come in - I'm thinking of getting one, and turning the pedals in & handlebars sideways... just in case? (this is basically what Ryanair ask you to do).

Also as regards tools - since theres a 15Kg allowance for the bike, I was thinking of strapping a tool bag securely to the bike in order to avoid an extra KG or 2 on my main luggage? Any reason not to?

There have been quite a few threads on the cycling and triathlon forums about this. Have a look there.
