Hi everyone. I'm hoping someone can help me out with this. Oncee you have a Bachelor's degree can you go on to study a Master's degree and then a PHD or can you go straight and study for a PHD? Also when studying for a PHD is it like when you're doing a Masters and you can either do it through classes or research? Thanks in advance.

It all depends on the discipline and/or the university.

It's not unheard of for people to go into a doctoral programme directly from a primary degree, but you'll want to get a first in said primary degree before even considering going this route.

PhD programmes are completed purely by research and dissertation.

PhD's are accomplished through novel research. You can enter into a PhD directly after a bachelors degree in Ireland, you usually require a second class or above to be considered into a program. However, this is not necessarily a requirement, I know some people who have been admitted with a pass degree. You should look up graduate admissions in your college/s of interest to find the exact requirements. Some graduate programs in certain colleges may require that you register as a Masters student initially and do a 'transfer' to progress onto the PhD register.

A master's can be accomplished by doing research, or thought in which you take classes. Again, you should look up requirements in the colleges you are interested in.

Some courses also offer a 1+3 PhD structure where the first year is equivalent to a Masters and you can (though they generally frown upon it) withdraw after the first year and get the Masters qualification.
