Firstly: Mods I realise this in verboten as per the charter and I apologise in advance - delete it if you must. I'm posting this here because I know there are some techs posting who know what I'm trying to do and I value their expertise.

I am in dire need of a Maxtor MaXLine II 300GB HDD. Can you help ?

I have one of these drives belonging to a friend who stores karaoke files which he uses in his business. I got a blank expression when I suggested that of course he had a back-up . . he doesn't.

The controller board has a fried i.c. on it. He swears the drive died suddenly so I'm hoping that a replacement board will restore the drive to allow a backup. It doesn't matter if the donor drive's heads/platters work or not, as long as they at least spin up then the controller board should be ok.

I've tried a controller board from another Maxtor drive that looked almost identical but the capacity was 120GB and the drive just kept hunting and never appears.

Maybe someone here can suggest another drive with a similar controller - anything that leads to a recovery of the content would be appreciated.

    ZEN
