A friend of mine has the above and the screen is also dark.

He has tried to fn and light button to brighten the screen up but with no joy.

He said it just went dark when it was on.

Any ideas what the problem is or even better a solution.

I haven't got the laptop to hand but will have later

    Thanks in advance

it is likely to be the video driver, if you have vista installed particularly. I have that laptop and the vista driver for the video card caused a lot of problems, including that one at one stage. Google about the card and the driver. There is an update you can use to fix it.

How dark is it? If it's so dark that what's on the screen can barely be seen then it's probably a problem with the backlight.

Its the back light but more the sensor as the button that turns on and off the back light is gone bogey.

Back light turns on when screen is open but turns off again a few seconds later.

Could be a faulty connection either.

When you turn on the laptop first, is the Dell logo at full brightness? Does the problem occur only once windows loads or is it straight from the moment you turn it on? If its only when windows loads its a software/driver issue, otherwise it would be hardware related if its a dim screen from powering on straight away.
