how many texts are you comparing? Our teacher is having us do 3 when lots and lots of people seem to be doing just 2

    We're doing:
    wuthering heights,
    strictly ballroom and
    philadelphia here i come

some other students who are getting grinds (which is many of them) have had grinds teachers tell them to forget about wuthering heights because it's too difficult. I have no intention to forget about it because it gives me more to write about something I've never written anything about before yet so yerrrr..

    What do people think?

    we're doin three

philadelphia here i come(i think a lot of people are doin it)
    cinema paradiso
    boyhood

its seems ok just need to do one out on each over next couple of days ,get corrected ,improve and learn.

With doing 2 there's a risk of limiting which questions you can do, though, isn't there? Some of them specifically ask you to write about one and then compare two others... doing 3 gives you a lot more choice, and more to write about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

There are some questions where you've to compare at least 2, so you could get away with only studying 2. But 3 texts means you've got more to talk about, more to compare, you wont need to know the texts in as much detail. Just makes it easier I figure, if you've already studied them in school like.

    We're doing...
    Lies of Silence
    The Truman Show
    The Crucible.
Don't know the Crucible too well at all, but apparently because it's the third text we don't need to know it inside out.

We're doing the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, The Truman Show and The Crucible.

Theme of deception. There's loads to talk about.

    We studied

    How Many Miles to Babylon
    The Truman Show
    My Left Foot
    Philidelphia Here I Come
    :)

Haven't decided what 3 I'm gonna use in the exam though

    We're doing three:

    Philadelphia, Here I Come!
    Jane Eyre
And either Cinema Parradiso or The Truman Show

The only thing Wuthering Heights did right was make me feel like it really did take 30 years to read through it all.

really though if youve read it at all its easy enough to grasp

    Such an annoying book.

Though my class has come to the conclusion that The Crucible is crap, of course we're not going to go criticising Miller in the LC but come on man, what's with the "4 months later..." in the middle?

This is a great question because u know it before u go in..

    It'll either be:

"Write about a theme or issue in the texts you have studied"

"Write about the cultural context in the texts you have studied"

    Or

    "Write about literary genre....."

we're just doing cul. con. and theme or issue.

We're doing three aswell; Cinema Paradiso, Purple Hibiscus and the Plough and the Stars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,536 ✭✭✭Mark200

    Yeah we're also doing three....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

    Philadelphia Here I come
    Old School
    The Truman Show

great comparisons between the three, all about the main characters search for truth and a real life

No one else doing Old School?, I like literary genre and theme and issue but not a huge fan of cultural context myself

    - Strictly Ballroom
    - Philadelhpia, here I come

    - Lies of Silence

I like the ones in blue, I hate Lies of Silence. PHIC and SB are my two best, so if the two part question is nice, I'll do them in (a) and LOS in (b).

do 3 texts - it means you get two comparisons per paragraph and you need 8 in total minimum so you can easily write on four paragraphs in your answer. if you used two texts you would have to write 8 paragraphs

We're doing Philadelphia, Here I Come
    The Plough and the Stars
and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.

    All three very good texts.

    I'll do that, thanks!

How many quotes are required? Is it something like 1 quote for each point? :o

Quotes aren't as important here as in the Othello question. I personally just put them in where I see appropriate or when a good, relevant one comes to mind.

    My three texts are :
    Wuthering Heights
    Plough and the Stars
    12 Angry Men

I don't mind them. While WH was a little difficult, I find it useful for the comparative question because it's so vast.

We were told we didn't need any quotes for the comparative. o.O

We've done phidelphia here i come, the trumann show and the secret life of bees.Major problem though,,we have only done theme so far and still have two poets left to do with just 4 days of school left.I've come to accept that we arnt going to do any more on the comparative....any advice anyone, because i havnt a clue of cultural context or literary genre,we havnt even touched on it!

Well you don't need too many at all from my understanding, well not like the single text at all anyway

    We're doing
    • Strictly Ballroom
    • The Plough and the Stars
    • How Many Miles To Babylon.
I'm not sure about the quotes though, so I always stick one in where I think it's relevant..

Would u say it will end up Theme or issue/ Cultural Context????????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8 Raichu-17-08-2008

I'm leaning towards more Lit Gen and Theme or Issue rather than Cultural Context..

    strictly ballroom
    old school

Our teached said that were should refer to all three texts over the entire answer. We don't have to write about them all equally, or compare all three for each point we make, but all three are supposed to be in the answer.

Im doing the theme of "a young mans journey to self discovery" using
    • Philadelphia, Here I Come
    • Strictly Ballroom
    • The Curious Incident of the Dong in the Night-time

It's easy enough once you have the basic points.

Themes and Issues, you only have to concentrate on 1 theme isn't it? For example you pick love and talk about all the diff types in the 3 texts?

our teacher isn't the best for explaining and im startin to get a litle worried:S

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

    Yeah, just the one theme.

Also, I've found in experience, doing the text you don't like/don't know well in the (b) part isn't always the best idea. I did that for my mock, talked about The Crucible in the (b) section because I don't know it too well, but in retrospect, writing an entire essay (admittedly shortish one) on your worst text alone doesn't seem like a fantastic idea.

Yep, one theme. You should have 'key moments' from each text that illustrate this theme. Theme is likely, considering it didn't come up last year. I did cultural context, because I loved it. Theme is less time consuming because you have less to compare and contrast each text against. You SHOULD attempt to write equally about each text, if you neglect one and it's really obvious you've done so, you'd more than likely be penalised, unless the marking scheme changes.

You do need quotes for the comparative. Not that many, and generally only in the 'key moments' part of the theme question. It can be handy for cultural context too, but not as much as theme.

I did five last year... mental teacher. Mental. Used three in the end tho.
    Here it is http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055083426&highlight=english+comparative
