    Hello everyone,
I am new to this site and was looking for some help if possible.
I have had a shotgun for years and do some phesant shooting, I am getting a rifle now and was hoping someone could put me in the right direction. I intend to shoot rabbits in the main but would also like something that could take on a fox occasionally. I'm not to bothered about semi-auto or bolt action but would like a decent scope as well. My budget is €500 new or used.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

CZ 452 in either .22WMR or .17HMR seems to be your best bet. For taking on a reasonable bumber of foxes, the .22WMR is probably the better option. You should pick one up for about 450. Best of luck.

Thanks for that. Do you know anyone selling one or a decent gunsmith in the west or dublin. I was thinking of getting the scope on line, could you recommend a good one. I was looking at a Bushnell rimfire 4x32 scope. Thanks again

I seem to remember there being folk on here selling the odd one, so if you put a wanted thread in the for sale section looking for that you might be in luck. Bushnell scopes are usually a good bet alright, hard to go too far wrong. You might want variable magnification though, something like a 3-9x40 or x50; the larger objective lens is nice if you do a lot of lamping.

If you have transport go further, afield I think dublin rices are a bit steep saw as an example cz 22lr rimfire and scope €650. Can get it cheaper than that in my parts. I see Galliel is having a sale this week they sell NC star scopes which imo are quite good on rimfires. Best of Luck

get yourself to grffin and hawe in athy, co kildare. thats the place for a cheap .22. Cz you'l be looking to pay about 300 - 400 for a second hand one with scope. Dont be fussy about the scope if its a .22 if you ask me because you'l only be getting yourself on your feet and you wont need anything too snazy!

the only thing that is against you is the fact that its summer now and rifle shooting takes first seat for this time of year in a lot of cases.

Thanks for all the advice lads. I was in Duffy's in Galway today. I really liked the Remington .17 597 semi-auto. It's €450. I bought a Bushnell Elite 3-9x50 scope for €200 on the web. I think i'm going to go with the Remington.

Sounds like a good buy. I think Cavan Shooter has a 597 and he has plenty of good things to say about it, so you should be well set. Nice scope, about the right money to get a quality scope to start you out too.
