    'For parts or restorarion'

The chassis is probably rotten. It's cheap for a reason.

It seems to me that at that price you couldn't go wrong. You easily get that back if you sold the parts, grille, lights wheels etc.....

Its odd though, I am sure I've seen this car elsewhere for more money !

Jeez, for the price you must be able to poke a McDonalds straw through the floors. The body and trim seem tip top.

V8 coffee table and velour couch, anyone?!

I'm sure that car was on Carzone last year for sale in Dublin at similar money. I wish I could find a running W115 for that sort of money

Indeed! Even if the interior is tatty, the worst would be in the front. Would love the space, time and inclination to do something like that. *sigh*.

I can't help myself... I rang the guy and got the detail on the Merc and it sounds reasonably okay - basically needs work.

I sold an XJ6 Daimler in apparantly similar order for similar money a few months ago so don't be too suspicious of this car. Basic issues are that it needs work, has the wrong coloured plates and is not a practical daily driver. I ran the Daimler as a daily for a short time but 15mpg just doesn't make sense.

Still half considering it though probably won't go for it... already have 2 old Mercs in the yard and have given my word on buying a third one.

I could actually afford the car myself, but there is no way in hell myself, a 21yr. old male, would get insurance on that!

This car is now sitting in my yard. Have to say there's good power in that car 30 year old engine... couldn't go too mad on account of a distict lack of brakes - one rear caliler siezed boiled the fluid...

I love updates like this :D

Restoring it to daily driver status, 8~)?

Tell us, how is the body and chassis? Is it solid or is it like Fred Flintstone's car? :pac:

Haven't gone over it in detail but reckon it needs a sill, wing and a few repair patches on the front inner wings. Rear arches have filler in them and there are a couple of other spots that have seen repairs over the years.

Main thing is that the interior is dry and floors and bulkhead seem intact.

Mechanically the drivetrain feels good. Needs caliper repair/replacement, exhaust sooner rather than later and other bits and bobs...

Goodish news is that it won't be my project - my brother purchased, not me. I hadn't even mentioned to him that I'd already enquired but he rang me yesterday morning about 'go looking at a car'... dunno will it be a daily driver, Unkel, at least not with that 4.5 litre engine. If it were mine I would have ideas about a diesel conversion, but in a way that would be a pity. There's something strangely satisfying about mashing the pedal to the floor and feeling the near two tonnes swatting its rear, lifting its nose and taking off...

Have to say fair play to the seller - a real enthusiast, knew the car, pointed out all the problems he knew of, very honest.

Fair play to your brother 8~), thats a whole lotta car for the lolly..It could be a whole lotta trouble too, but sounds workable. Keep us posted!

I reckon it'll be a slow restoration 'cos it'll be me doing some of it and I hardly can get time to do anything on my own cars.

Better news is that my W123 went through the NCT on Friday - failed, but only on a tyre. Slight bulge on the inside... I hadn't noticed it. Not bad for a 24 year old car.

    Hurray another one saved !!

Please dont do a diesel conversion on it, I'd hate that, although I do have a real yearing for a lovely old Fintail with a modern 320CDi engine in it !! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭8~)

Don't think the 450 be getting the diesel engine. Eventually I think it'll be going into my W123, replacing the 200 carb motor.

What's that got to do with the price of veg oil?

veggie oil prices gone up 50% last week and will probably at the level of diesel at the end of the year:mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭8~)

    Really?

I've been back on petrol power for the last few months so have not looked at the cost of veg oil...

...right, so now I have to figure a way of powering a car using grass cuttings.

yes but of course we are not doing it for cost savings but for having a carbon neutral commute.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭8~)

True, I also want to reduce pollution. Cost savings are good too, though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Jeeeeeeeez 50% increase. How did they justify that ??

Its like what they did with the LPG, thats eco freindly and they just sent prices crazy with taxation !

    Demand on biofuel.

Well, running on Biofuel (PPO, Biodiesel etc.) does not really reduce pollution but it's more or less carbon neutral.
