    Hi folks

I have an error mesage on a Dell Inspiron 6400 running XP

    C0000218 (registry file failure)
The registry cant load the hive
    \sysroot\sys32\config\software
is corupt absent or not writable.

excuse the abbreviations but you get the idea. I get the same blue screen even when booting in safe mode.

I 'm wondering if its just the system files needed for booting that are corrupt. I havent got the windows disc that came with this machine. will any OEM XP cd do the job or do I need to get the one for this machine?

am I wasting my time anyway, is the hard drive bust?

    thanks

I take it Windows doesn't start?

In that case, you could try a manual system restore.

The file you need is c:\windows\system32\config\SOFTWARE (no extension).

It's a very big file usually (one of mine is over 70Mb)

Providing you've access to it, you can start the recovery console from an XP disk and when you get the prompt, go to the Sytem Volume Information folder and copy the SOFTWARE file from there (there will be a good few subfolders from various system restores - pick the latest).

You may have to use the attrib command to unhide the folder and subfolders.

nah windows doesnt start. the person I'm tryin to fix this for doesnt have the admin password either:eek:

there is warranty left so I think I'll get her to deal with the dell guys, get it repleaced and try hook it up as an external hard drive later to recover what we can from it.

    thanks for the help

The admin password is usually blank (nothing) on new builds unless the owner changed it.

A Dell XP OEM CD should do the trick - you'd need either Pro or Home CD depending on the system . I dont think one will repair the other (but am open to correction on this) .
