Hi I am thinking of spending about 800 - 1000 on an entry level Tri bike.
I am wondering if there is a big saving to be had buying in the States. I recently bought golf clubs there for less than half price and had a friend bring them home for little or no cost.
The same mate is over in California for few weeks and would be willing to bring home a bike if I organised it but only if saving made it worth any hassle he endures.
Customs charges will not be an issue.
Obviously I know there is the serious issue of sizing..
Has anyone done this, would it be worth it
anyone know any california bike shops ?

slowtwitch.com is another message board devoted to ironman in the USA and they will be able to suggest California bike shops. I know a couple of friends who got their bikes in san Francisco complete with custom paint jobs!

No offence but it does sound like you a bit of a newbie.
So think of this..... you spend you 1k on a bike, you bring it home, you set yourself up on it. Do you know what you are doing? If not the cost savings are not worth it. The amount of people in the irish tri scene on flash bikes with crap setups is amazing. Again its more about the set up and position that it is about the bike.

Tunney I take your point and advice, just trying to cover all bases before making a significant investment. More than likely will buy here and wait till I'm at decent level before upgrading.
FYI from a little research done this morning a 1500 euro bike here would cost 1000 euro in states. Eg. Quintana Roo Kilo

Oh there is huge money to be saved, just make sure its not a false economy.

(PS the Quintana Roos get slated for aerodynamics, as in the frames just aren't. Any of them)
