Im starting this thread in the hope that you will share info/advice and the love in general re sharp glass, especially the lenses that were cheap/ unexpected and decent.

To start, I have a tamron 90mm f2.8 , that I bought for macro photos. Its pretty much just stayed on the camera since I bought it, now occasionally replaced by a 50mm F2.8 (mainly as its lighter)

The lens is sharp, a little slow to focus and a small bit of chromatic abb, easily fixed in PS. I love it.

Out of all in my bag the Canon 100mm macro would be my sharpest, super optics and you can use shots out of it with very little shaprening.

Kind of hard to tell without testing them, but I haven't any complaints about any of them. The 100mm macro or the 200mm ƒ1.8 are definitely up there though.

Canon 300mm f/2.8 or else my 70-200mm f/2.8. Both very sharp lenses.

Certainly not cheap, but high quality.

As for cheap, Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro.

Mine would be the Canon 100mm Macro or the Canon 70-200L f4

Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 sharp as hell.

Is there anything it can't do

My 24-70L is my sharpest zoom.

Prime wise, it's a toss up between my 135L or my Sigma 2.8 Macro.

I actually have to say, where the Lensbaby is sharp... It's incredibly sharp - I've just printed out a print at pretty much 1m by 1m... And it's impressive.

    canon 50mm f/1.8

    Toss up between 24-70L f2.8 or 50mm f1.4

    my 135L

I've read a lot of great reviews of this lens. I think it's gonna be the next one I get. Good gig lens?

Might be a bit too much zoom for a gig. You might be better off with a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4...

I dont have the macro version, but my Canon 100mm is probably my sharpest lens.

I also love my 200m f2.8L but i dont tend to use it all that often unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

It's a great lens if you just want head shots, I rather the 24-70 length for gigs though.

I think, in a way, that I've got way too high an expectation for lenses. I got into the habit of pixel peeping.I know it's not the be-all and end-all of lens quality, but I'm getting obsessed by sharpness, to the extent that I've sold a good many lenses in the quest for sharpness. I fear that if the Canon 100mm Macro is one of the sharpest around, then I'm destined for constant disappointment :( It's sharp alright, but I was expecting 'L' zoom lenses to be sharper.

bitta PS sharpening on the 350 kit lens.... tis grand!

Probably the nifty fifty. I've got the worst selection of lenses, unfortunately!

I'm just after something fast with a bit of reach. pretty much just for head shots, so you've answered it there. 24-70 is a great lens on your 5d, but the range isn't as cool on the 400d I have :)

Have the 50 1.4 already, it's pretty much my primary lens at the moment

I like to think that my sharpest lens is just behind the Viewfinder
    :p

my old reliable 50 mm , 1.8 , along with my Olympus 765 my happiest photographic purchases -- oh and a book on Roma photography.

Here's one from about 15 minutes ago with the 100mm ƒ2.8 macro. View large for my sunburned forehead in the reflection.
I've also been instructed to remind people that cats are our rulers. That is all.

Evil look on the cat. Mine is probably the 300mm f/2.8L

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,520 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

Currently the 50mm f1.8 but I expect big things from my soon to be new 70-200 f2.8 IS!

50mm f2 pre-AI Nikkor-H - kills the kit lens when stopped down one stop to f2.8

but there's just the problem of getting it manually focused on target ;)

Also my cheapest lens (30 euro) :D

I use the 400D kit lens for wide, sigma 70-300 for long range, 50mm 1.8 for everything else... yes, I'm a cheap bastard. :)

That's my set up there, except I have the Canon version of the 70-300, which I haaaaate. Useless lens.

I guess prime macro lenses were always going to lead the pack.

Good to see some more budget lenses that are good and sharp without having to fork out a grand plus.

I have a slight sharp lens fetish developing, methinks......:D
