If you want to replace the internal one, a 2.5" SATA HDD.

If you want an external, so long as you format it to use the FAT file system, you're good to go.

    EDIT: Dang!

For that price that is a PC 3.5" HDD not a 2.5" laptop HDD.

You are looking for SATA 2.5" HDD.

The hard drive in the PS3 is a 2.5 inch SATA laptop type drive and the one in the PS3 works at 5400rpm ( I believe ).

I dont think the ripm matters too much , but it must be a 2.5 inch SATA laptop type.

Heres a website that does them , they are not the cheapest but it should give you some ball park figures.

Depends on if you want the drive to be internal or external.

An Internal drive for the PS3 (Swap the first one out and replace it) needs to be a 2.5 Inch SATA drive at 5400 or 7200rpm. Here's an example The speed is negligable TBH, just get a 5400rpm

If its an external drive you want there's loads and there are no physical size limits because it will conect via a USB Cable. They're pretty cheap nowadays. The one you mentioned is decent enough value.

    Here's 500GB for €89

Sorry i am not the most techically minded person. I am after a external drive as I have used all my internal memory. I hope this makes sense?

Be prepared for heartache if you want to replace the internal hard drive. The screws that hold it in the metal frame are a b*tch to remove. I'm after stripping them and unless I can find another frame(already tried ebay and sony support, no joy) I can't change the hard drive:(

    Yep that makes sense.

The link I posted to the 500GB Drive (€89) is the thing you need. The drive you saw in Peats sounds right too so whatever you want to do:D

Replacing the internal hard drive is NOT complicated at all, once you have the correct tools. Make sure you have 2 or 3 different sized philips head screw drivers before you start.

If you aren't the most technical, having an external hard drive can be cumbersome if you move your ps3 even semi regularly.

Fitting an internal drive means you never have to worry about it again.

    You would never know .........

But in any case the OP wanted an external so it depends if they want an AC power supply one or one that powers off the USB.

You can't power an external 3.5" drive off USB - not enough power from the USB ports.
That what FireWire is for ;) (and no, there's no FW on the PS3)

An external drive doesn't necessarily have to be 3.5...
The WD Passport for example should work with only the USB cable afaik

    I agree,
    This for instance : http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=350827

Powers off the USB and doesnt have to be 3.5"

This is the one I have at the moment: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=344499

Will probably install an internal one over the summer.

You don't need to be very technical to pick up an external HD and carry it somewhere else :p

I see your point though, it can be a disadvantage if you move your PS3 around regularly and want to bring your music/movies with you. It can also be an advantage aswell, if you want to bring music/moves/storage somewhere else and not bring your whole PS3 along. Different things suit different peoples needs, external HD was perfect for me because I can hook it up to my PC and use it a lot with that too, for people wanting it purely for their own PS3 an internal is probably the way to go.

Agreed. But for the greedy, they'd have a 320GB internal HDD and a 500GB external. Best of both worlds :)

But yes, agreed. Different situations for different people.
