Venezuela for 2 weeks

    Hi,

Myself and my girlfriend are spending two weeks in Venezuela in June. We're unsure as to what to do there. We plan on spending 3 days in caracas, 4 in Margarita Island (for a friend's wedding), 2 days in Canaima to see the park and Angel falls, 2 days in the south to see the Amazon rainforest, and 2 days in the west of the country.

Can anyone who has been there let me know what they liked/disliked in Venezuela. I am not really sure how easy it is to get from Canaima to Angel Falls, or how easy it is to get to the Amazon rainforest.

    Thanks for any help

    Hi Niall,

Yeah we had a great time. Angel falls were cool; unfortunately because of all the tourist traffic you can be in the middle of the Amazon and not see any wildlife. That said, you get to see the falls in all their glory (also check if time of year means that you can actually get to them). The tour we did was a little bare on substance; there is nothing to it apart from the falls.

Wouldn't recommend Margarita Island (littered barren tourist trap island) unless you are a die-hard wind surfing fan. I have heard Los Roques is nicer. Also heard nice things about Maracaibo, the city near Los Roques.

If you want to see Caracas do it first when you land; chances are by the end of your holiday you will be tired and in no mood to do the exhausting metropolis that is Caracas.

Highlight was Los Ilanos. The town of Merida (16 hour overnight bus from Caracas) is laid back, safe and close to Andes mountains. Get a 5/7 day tour from this town to the flats to see Caimen, anaconda, giant anteater, dolphin, parrots, capybara and everything else. I highly recommend it.

We booked internal flights and trip to Angel Falls from travel agent in Caracas domestic terminal (beside international). Don't book anything from outside country unless you have Venezuelan friend. Overnight buses are great way to travel (though cold) so book one day in advance.
