I suck at genres, so I was hoping you guys/guyettes could help me out. My current playlist includes Lostprophets, Fall Out Boy, Simple Plan etc. Could you tell me what genres these bands are in? eg. rock, punk, alternative etc.

i hate the word genre, because people take it as gospel when someone says a certain band is a certain genre.

to me those bands would be wuss-pop rock. with fall out boy being wuss-pop rock with muddled vocals.

File them all under music and use the time wasted listening to them.

i would put the three in different genres, simple plan is pop punk, lost prophets would be indie Rock and best  and fall out boy.... errrm emo-poppunk...is that even a genre?

File under emo-cack and go listen to some decent music. ;)(or otherwise emo-punk/emo-rock)

They all qualify as emo to me. But emo is mostly a by-word for crap in my dictum.

LostProphets seem to change depending on the trend of the time - had been rock, punk, emo...Could be evolution or changing their sound depending on what they like and want to do - or it could be following the $$$

Simple Plan - Emo, pop-punk...Lyrics are very teenage-ish emo-angst but try to come across more punk.

Fall Out Boy - Pop-punk. It's what they define themselves as too (interesting interview with Joe)

I wouldn't be too concerned or hooked on genres though. Even if you say you like emo or metal or whatever, there are sub-genres within them or bands that you won't like...Really doesn't matter at the end of the day!

Funny i was only saying to a friend early on how difficult it can be nowadays putting a band ,group, or artist into a particular genre .Loooking at Jools hollond live show on bbc 2 earlier this evening and as usual he had such a diversity of groups on such as Robert Plant / Allison kruss combo which make for more intresting styles mixed together .

They'd all be pop punk, or groups influenced by pop punk. Simple Plan's influences probably don't stretch back any further than 1994, but Fall Out Boy have some pretty bitchin '80s hardcore and funk influences going on.

You could do worse than go to the Fueled By Ramen and Drive Thru Records websites and take a listen to their other artists, since they both specialise in that sort of music.
