Yes, you have one month's leeway. Afaik, car can now be seized if tax is two months out of date.

[edit] txt spk is not allowed on boards.

I never knew there was 1 months period of grace to renew motor tax. Are you certain this is correct?

AFAIK isn't txt spk; it's an acronym.

OP, why not just renew your tax when it's due, you'll only have to pay arrears when you do renew anyways, you won't gain anything out of dilly dallying.

I don't know, but I would imagine it would depend on what kind of day the Garda in question had had up to stopping you. If tax is out of date the vehicle is not legal to be driven on a public road. My dad's union constantly has arguments with fleet management over this issue and drivers refuse to drive as they can be prosecuted for not displaying a current original tax/insurance disc

    Yes there is.

Can you clarify with a reference please?

The only reference I could find was this...(from a local authority in Donegal).

The Days of Grace Vehicle Licence is effective for the first seven days of each month.
The days of grace are used in Motor Tax Offices in the following circumstances:

    1. To allow applications to be processed for a particular month that are received in the post where the application was posted at the end of a month received in the Motor Tax Office during the first seven days of the next month
    2. To allow applications rejected at the front counter during a particular month and received back in during the first seven days of the next month.
    3. To alleviate queues at the beginning of the month.

Arrogant sh!te. Not everyone has the cash immediately available to them to blow on Car Tax. Also to tax the car you need to have passed an NCT if your are liable for one. My tax and NCT were both due at the end of April but the earliest appointment I could get for an NCT was May 4th. And this was booking at the end of march. Get of your high horse and try to realise there is a reason for everything.

How is it arrogant ****e? (the end bit wasnt needed mind) but rules are there for a reason. If you cant afford to tax your car you shouldnt be drivinging it.

If I cant afford the fee or havnt time to do my test , should I just go ahead and drive anyway and get it sorted later?

You dont need an nct to tax the car either, but again the law is that you need it to drive a car on the road so again you should'nt be driving without one. You can do the nct up to 3 months before its due so no excuse there tbh.

Your reasons for not fullfilling requirements set out by law are fairly irrelevant.

On the form you receive from the Tax office it does say that you have 1 month from the expiration date of your tax to renew it.

    .

IT may well be there but where? http://www.kildare.ie/CountyCouncil/PrintingForms/MotorTaxation/LinkToFormName,11509,en.pdf

I would tend to agree with him though. It's not as if car tax is a sudden, unexpected bill, now is it. If people budgeted properly, they should know what bills are coming up in the next few months and save accordingly. Also, NCT is not required to obtain a motor tax renewal.

That's not the form you get in the post.

The form you receive in the post, states on it that there is a 1 month grace..

It doesnt say theres a months grace, it just says the pin has to be used before the end of say May (taking it as tax has expired at the end of April)
That is just because the pin expires a month after the end of the last tax disc so you have to retax in person. Theres nothing mentioned about being allowed drive without tax, because at the end of the day theres no requirement to tax a car if it's not on the road . the grace period is an unofficial thing with the gards where they turn a blind eye for the first month or so.

You do need insurance. The fact that the details you enter on the form or online are not checked is a separate issue.

If you give false insurance details, you are liable to prosecution.

Interesting reply, without knowing the circumstances. i just asked a question...My english is fine by the way. When typing quickly it can sometimes stray abit i'll admit...

I didnt realise this forum was a juncture for people who have received english lessons. Have you received english lessons? Are you so exceptionally bright and your fingers so adept and agile that you never make typos?

i take your comment as an insult and i believe you should be reported for same. not my fault you got out of the wrong side of the bed. Use your insults on someone else you arrogant, <SNIP>

never mind english lessons ...some common courtesy would be nice too.

In other words ...mind your language and consider this a pre ban warning

Where does it say that? I have my renewal form in front of me and i've the entire thing and cant see that anywhere. It says application must be made during this month 'April'.
