Went down to The docks today with the camera and got there just as the lifeboat was being recovered. Said I'd post a couple for anyone that might be interested.

Yes, the bigger ones are all weather lifeboats and these are inshore lifeboats that are restricted to force 7/8 winds during the day and force 6/7 at night where as the all weather boats have no restrictions. there is an all weather boat on the Arran Islands. They are all run by the RNLI.

Is it not a very big long drawn out process hooking it up to the crane etc?

Surely a ramp to launch it would be quicker and more efficient?

The problem with Galway is the confined area where the station is situated and this form of davit launch is deemed the most efficient in the circumstances. There are about fifteen davit launched stations around british Isles. Galway can be in the water and on its way with in 15 mins from the pagers going off, so that is very quick considering that this is a city and is not that much slower than other forms of launching and quicker than some, like carriage launched all weather boats.
