Parking anywhere you want

I came across so much ignorance with people parking their cars. Most of it i can tolerate like people parking half way on the road instead of in the parking space beside them on the inside. They leave it half empty and have most of their car on the road forcing people to overtake on a solid white line. I just laugh at their ignorance and hope someone takes their mirror off.
But a few days ago, i was in a car park finding it quite hard to find a parking space when i see a car parked in the middle of 4 parking spaces. that is just stupid. why do people only think of themselves. if i was a clamper, i would have clamped all four of his wheels.

The reason people take more than one space in a car park is because they dont want to get their doors dented. It's a form of prevention really, and the ignorant fookers are the ones who swing open their own car door as wide as possible, without a car in the world whether it hits anything in its path.

Therefore, as long as there's mindless gob****es out there who damage other cars by denting the bodywork, then there will always be people who take more than one space in a car park. The latter group are just taking care of their property.

And as for clamping don't get me started on that.

Seen a woman in an atoz (or getz) last night taking up 3 spaces - boggles the mind!

But an easier solution is just park away from everyone else. Of course this is no gurantee but in my local shopping centre, there is always loads of room in the far corner, even on the busiest Saturday afternoon.

Strangly people still doublepark and block each other in nearer the shopping centre entrance. And circle and circle around trying to get a parking space by the door when there are plently 200 metres away:confused:

    That takes work! :p

OP; people just don't care about anyone other than #1 anymore. The joys of money coming to the people of Ireland; where people suddenly have loads of money, ignorance becomes rife as everyone now believes that they're now so much better than the next person.

For those who feel that the above is BS, try working in a shop/pub/anywhere dealing with the general public for a couple of weeks.

No matter where you park even if its the furthest away, there's always some muppet who will park beside you even in an empty car park. First weekend I had my car (which even though a few years old had perfect panels) I parked about 400m away from everyone else. Only to come back and find a jeep parked beside mine, and yes he'd put a tiny dent in mine with his door.

I was working on a door one night, and offered a guy in his early twenties a light for his cigarette. Instead of thanks, I got "ah, a doorman with ambition". The guy working with me just started laughing because he knew what I did in the daytime.

It wouldn't be so bad, but the kid was one of the biggest rednecks I had encountered in a while!

I wish I'd parked in my usual spot (miles from the entrance) in Tesco this morning. Came out of the shop at 07:40 to find a lady with her jeep parked about 6 inches from my car. Then I watched her open her passenger door into my car. With me standing there! Lovely scratch in the door of my car now.

If I was driving an aston martin, or some sort of ferrari I would take up at least two parking spaces in a ar park by parking diagonally in it

If your car is worth 15-20 times more than a standard runabout (~200 vs. ~10k) I think you have that right

True, but a runabout worth a few hundred might be the most prized possesion of some poor student or someone.
What I'm trying to say is a banger may mean the same if not more to a pauper then a Ferrari to a millionaire.

I've explained that badly but you get the gist

You may not have a right, but you would be inclined to minimise the chances of a ding on your door from some dozy inconsiderate driver, who, just because he /she doesn't give a ****e about their own car slams into other cars unaware of the frustration they are causing.

It's a right - No, the sensible thing to do - Maybe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,513 ✭✭✭BrianD3

I don't agree with taking up two spaces. It messes up the "order" of parking, it is inconsiderate, it draws attention to your car and makes it more likely to be keyed etc. If your car is so precious that you want to put up an exclusion zone around it then leave it at home and get a beater for everyday use.

Now one thing that drives me mad is when cars are parked on bends, crests etc. and you have to take a risk to overtake them. If you collide with an oncoming car because you're overtaking a parked car on a blind bend, then it's you who will get all or most of the blame. An example of this is in Edgeworthstown Co. Longford , some stupid bitch in a yellow Yaris regularly parks her car on a sharp bend and forces cars onto the wrong side of the road, I have seen a few near misses because of this.

If I was you, and I had her reg, I'd pursue her for criminal damage.

Also, I should have mentioned in my previous post that people who wish to take care of their car, generally, park as far away from everyone else as possible and probably take two spaces. On the other hand, the people who park arseways right outside the front door (yes it does happen), are generally just lazy/ignorant. I should have made this distinction earlier, as I don't condone laziness.

Happens to me all the time. I am convinced that if i parked in the middle of the Sahara desert I'd come back to find two cars parked close on each side of mine. I think my car is strongly magnetic.

lately saw two old bags getting out of a car by basicially rubbing their doors of the left and right parked cars. what the hell, no respect for another persons property.

also a while back, i had a wife bang into my door without care with me still sitting in my car! i gave her a double taste of her own Medicine later on as well as a piece of my mind at the time.

as for bad parking, i leave notes on the windscreen of the offender. best note i left so far was to a woman who seemingly intentingly bumped into my car while parking her car(i was across the street gob-smacked) "you badly need driving lessons before you seriously hurt someone") i wasnt in the mood for getting vocal and confrontational that time and no damage done but hopefully the note makes more of an impact.

a right bad habit i see a lot lately is people just swinging into their space and not straightening it up. things can get tight for the other person reversing out of their space.

It drives me up the f*ckin wall when people park too close to the side where little one is......and i cant lift her into the car seat. I then have to pop her in the car the other side, with her thinking shes sitting in a big seat, to reverse the car and double park while i trying to strap a now screaming little person :mad:into her car seat. ANd dont get me started on trying to sometimes get into spots where people have parked too close while heavily pregnant, breathing in just doesnt work:eek:

What bout people's views on parkiing in parent/baby and disabled spots or is that a discussion for a different thread? The baby spots are there for people putting a wee baby together with the car seat into the car and they need a fair bit of room to do this....

On a slightly different note. Parent/child spots, what age do you think the baby/child should be before you stop using the parent/child spots? I have a 3 year old, he's still in a baby seat but I haven't used the parent child parking in ages as I feel a bit guilty.

I'm 27, if my mum is in the car with me, I'll pull into one - there's no age restriction! :p

I always look for an end space, or a space next to a yellow box or something and I park with my wheel just over the line on that side, just so as to give whoever parks next to me no exuse and so I can open my door out wide to get in and out with ease :)

However, has anyone noticed how small our parking spaces are here compared to other countries, especially in multistories even if properly parked there is hardly enough room for an averaged car to comfortably open their door enough to get out easily.

I get so  when people don't show respect for other people and their possesions.

Ah parking. Always seem to have idiots in college park in 2 spots just barely so that you then have to nudge your car in between another 2 spots. Instead I do as someone else has said and drive right up beside the drivers door. I had someone go mad at me for it, a girl giving it "but it's a new cor!" Told her to go f off and learn how to park. Why should I park in such a way that makes it much more difficult for me to get out of the car.

On another note, I was parking my car in a shopping centre during winter, it was pretty windy and the door got caught by the wind and hit another car. Straight away It was dark and raining so difficult to tell if anything wrong so I gave the bloke my number and other contact details and told him to get on to me if any repairs were needed. Fortunately he didn't call.

People with kids should just park further away from the main doors, they have prams for the children, it's not as if the kids have to walk. Actually here's an idea they should designate SUV zones as far away as possible, if you park anywhere else you should get fined €50/€60. Harsh yes, but the space they take up warrants this.

Edit: For pregnant women closer parking is ok in theory but you just end up having people taking advantage.

That's an idiotic statement. How many people can push a buggy and a trolley at the same time? The supermarkets thought of such a problem and put kid seats in the trolleys. The kids walk to the door if they're able or are carried if they're too young.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 578 ✭✭✭Leon11

How is that an idiotic statement? The amount of times I've seen women, actually parents hit their doors off other peoples cars is ridiculous. Their excuse is always the same, tight squeeze. If they can make it to spaces near the top why can't they make it 200 yards down the aisle. Pure laziness, just like people who circle the main entrance while 20 secs down the aisle there's plenty of spaces.

I have a little girl and sometimes I cant get into the car. Ill try and get her in the other side, but sometimes I cant. If this is the case, I open my door and gently place it against the other car. No damage is done and its literllay placed against it. Im very aware of other people smacking other cars, as I have 6 large dents on my passenger side. Looked at my car today and noticed a nice big dent/scratch on the drivers door

The problem with kids is that you need to open the door quite wide to get in with a baby seat, or to reach in and do the belts up. Its usual for someone with one kids to have more than one. So its safer not to have to cross a car park with a couple of kids in tow, and obviously loading and unloading is safer. In theory.

I agree with most of the rest of what you siad. I normally park as far away from the shop as possible with no cars parked around me, I don't want some dozy bint hopping her door off my alfa.

As I said I would park in two spots ..but to clarify this thats IF the carpark was relatively empty. Its like sitting on the bus and taking up two seats. Why the f**k not as long as the bus is not full? Obviously in paid carparks I would only take up one spot or where parking was scarce. I think taking up two spots in situations like this is taking the piss though although it really is justified with the carelessness of people these days and their attitudes. Also to those who park up against a car taking up two spaces... why??(unless its the only space around). Seems like you're just trying to cause trouble. I'll say it again.. if any of you drove a porsche or ferrari or the likes you wouldn't hesitate doing it because you would know how much the damage would cost to fix and how likely it would be.

It amazes me that so many people on here have experienced people smacking their car and having the person not care at all about it, deny it or get aggressive?

I know that and you know that as well as most people that if they're parked properly they're fine. No problems with that, it's a pain in the arse though when someone parking them is inconsiderate to others.

Boston B, fair point about having children cross car parks. Look at the end of the day all carpark layouts should be designed with parking zones with extra spaces for people with prams and small children, as it is most of them have a token gesture of 20-30 spaces which is obviously not enough. If they're put at the top fine, if at the back have a designated walkway like some carparks in the states have.

To whoever said I was jealous of people with new cars, get over yourself. There's a lot of inconsiderate people that drive new and second hand cars. It just really pisses me off to see others not care about others property. I had a new car all of 2 days last year when someone decided to leave a dent in it. On a side note the best carpark in my opinion is actually the Square in Tallaght. Instead of white lines they have a 1ft buffer zone in between spaces. Works quite well.

has anyone ever tried to protect the doors from ignorant careless morons using the door dent protectors?

I thought about it and googled it on the web - it's not a new problem and wise people have found a solution already, have a look at these links ->

    http://www.doordefender.com/door_protector_faq.html

here's the gallery of these things mounted on real cars, including the fancy ones
    http://www.doordefender.com/car_and_truck_door_protectors.html

they look a bit weird (one could say it "fancies" the car) but they do the trick, you keep them in the car and take them out only when parking in a dangerous spot, there's a protection wire you leave in the car preventing people from robbing them

Here's another company that do more flat ones in a car's color, held with a magnet as well - you put them on only when you parked and take them back before you drive away

    http://dentprotector.com/

they last for $30 which is 20 yoyos what is nothing comparing to the damage irrsponsible fecker can do to your door in one minute!
