Social side of the Emergency Services

    Hey folks,

Just wondering if ye can give me an insight into what the social side of working in the emergency services is like.

I would think that fire fighters working in the same house all develop a close bond and become good mates. Would this be accurate?

I'm not sure about Gardaí... my mate said you have great craic in Templemore; but once you start working full-time is there less scope to develop friendships, etc?

How many of your work colleagues do ye socialise with regularly?

Only know about Gardai. I have friends in the station and there is a lot of socialising between Gardai purely because your unit is off when you are but when soomeone moves on they generally dont last that well beyond phone calls and the occasional meet ups.

I can only speak for my dad, but, he has a lot of good friends from the guards, and some have retired and he has moved to another station but they are all quite close still, also, in his area, there is a garda social club which organises golf and nights out for anyone interested!

Can only speak for the guards too. I made some great friends in templemore and will keep in contact in the future. I get on great with my members but due to family commitments and living so far from them I haven't yet been out with them.

My dad once told that the friends you make in the guards are friends for life.

People usually say that about the army... I suppose there's parallels between the two :)

From the ambulance service point of view, it can be hard to socialise because of the hours we work. Some of us do make an effort to meet up every now & then. Some of my best friends were people I met at the National Ambulance Service College. We also socialise with the gardai alot. Not so much interaction with the fire service. We tend to work alot more with the gardai I suppose.
