Well any of the stick of ram there will improve the performance of the machine, all the sticks listed on the page you link to a 667mhz so thats as fast as they'll go. If you buy 2 of the same brand ie. the 2gb A-Data sticks then they'll work in dual channel mode and your friend will have 4gb of ram which is plenty. Although Vista is 32bit OS so will only show up 3.2gb but I'd still max out the ram to 4gb for the price its good value.

So you recommend uninstalling the current 1gb and installing 2 x 2gb then?

For the price of the ram, yes I would. You could just add another single 1gb stick to double the ram to 2gb if your stuck for money. Also you have to make sure it is a single 1gb stick on the laptop and not 2 x 512mb's.
