    Hi all
I just recieved a notice from Sky saying that from 6th May they will be launching a new version of More 4 for ROI and will be removing E4+1 and More 4+1 .
Also any recordings scheduled to record on the stations after this date will need to be re-selected on the 6th of May
Why do Sky do these stupid things, I have to re-set up all my series linked recordings on More 4 now
Its a bit short notice especially since you can re-select them until the 6th May

In fairness to Sky. I would imagine this change has nothing got to do with them. This is probably related to the fact that Ch4, E4 and More4 are supposed to be going Free to Air in the UK from the 6th May, coinsiding with the Launch of FreeSat. So these changes are Ch4 Changes not Sky's changes.

I can only assume the loss of e4+1 and More4+1 is for freeing up transponder space for freesat.

The Good news is you should no longer have to subscribe to SKY in order to receive CH4, E4 AND More4. They should be all available free, Like BBC

Yes i thought it had something to do with the launch of freesat after reading another thread the dates for both were the same.
Do you know if we will be able to recieve ITV HD on a Sky HD box when it goes FTA or will they have it encrypted?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,654 ✭✭✭givecredit

Not Sure. Its been reported this morning that ITV HD will only be available on Freesat. It is currently testing FTA, but is using an unusual codec which cannot be picked up by a Sky hD box or any other fta hd box for that matter. Some people with computers can receive it. I assume a "freesat" can pick it up.

I suppose we will have to wait until the 6th to find out.I would be happy enough if we could record from the other channels even the basic ITV , do you think it will ever appear on the Irish EPG ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,654 ✭✭✭givecredit

Never say never. But if i was a betting man I would say no, Not while TV3 is around. TV 3 holds the rights for many of ITV's programs in the Republic of Ireland.

I know that but the only thing i would really want to record from ITV would be The Bill and TV3 does'nt carry it,the hubby hates it so it would be handy to record and watch during the day rather than listening to moans and groans throughout the show much like i have to do with ER and Desperate Housewives-anything for a bit of peace:)

Does this mean my FTV (UK Card) will pick up these for FREE???

If it does what the hell are sky/ntl charging for ?? You can get an aerial for the Irish channels and then most of the "basic channels" are free !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,680 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

Thats what we have been saying for years, lots of free stuff and an aerial to get the Irish and free for ever more

    Happy days!!!

Must be at least 30 quality channels on FTV, plus add your Irish 4, what else can you ask for! Unless you want the Sports? My answer to that is more reason to pop to the pub!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,680 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

Better again, FTA! FTV will be a thing of the past once five get on board

You wont even need to have a UK FTV card for More4, Ch4 AND e4. They will be Free to Air. No Card required. Similar to BBC and ITV.

So Sky must have a plan to counter act this?

I know at least 5 or 6 people who are downgrading with me when our aerials are installed!

Once it becomes common knowledge Sky will be losing 100's if not thousands of subscribers!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

I wouldn't be so sure about them losing thousands of subscribers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,680 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

they should have lost them ages ago, most people only watch irish channels anyways along with bbc and itv yet pay sky 30 bobs a month to do that when as aerial and booster is only 50 euro self install or fta system maybe 150 bobs

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 742 ✭✭✭channelsurfer

sky ireland dont seem to have an idea that most people want the uk channels all of them including utv and bbc3 etc on the epg.
interesting times ahead. I will wait for a few months before investing in my freesat HD receiver to compliment my sky receiver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 484 ✭✭DigiDec

I got this postcard from sky too, would you think that they are just removing E4+1 and More4+1 from the EPG in ROI to maybe make room for Channel 4HD?

Also does anyone know if they are being removed from the UK EPG, if not they could still be added via Other Channels.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

They have no reason to remove them from just the Irish EPG. I think this is for everyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 828 ✭✭✭Round Cable

If this new more4 is a stream with Irish ads, just like E4 has now, they could be removed to stop us watching the +1s with British ads.

    Yeah, this seems plausible.

I'm not sure if the +1's are being removed from UK EPG, though I suppose I'll know after the sixth.

Yet more channels disappearing from the epg.
Sky's lineup is piss poor now .
I think its time to dump them,58 euro a month is poor value in my opinion.
All I really watch is the sports channels plus a few other select channels most of which are free to air.
I was going through the epg last night and the amount of junk channels there is crazy.
Also the channel numbering is very poor, its hap hazard.
Every year the programming output seems to be deteriorating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

    I pay 22 Eur.
You may have better value on a lower package.

I have other satellite receivers that just get the free channels.

Go to services and create your own favorites list (up to 50 channels).

Then Guide and press blue button to see your custom EPG

I think a possible outcome of this is that E4/More4 ROI on 11565V will remain encypted after 6th May. However the UK versions including the +1's will go FTA. By removing the +1's from the Irish EPG, C4 can continue to get sub revenue from Ireland as Sky can claim they are still part of the Variety mix. If the +1 versions were available FTA on the EPG, C4 would probably get nothing. There's no real benefit for C4 making the channels FTA over here. Of course anyone will simply be able to add the UK versions to other channels and watch for free but how much of the general public will know how to do that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,680 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

Answer to Peter, 0.000000000000000000001% of sky subs!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

100.0000% of UK FTA channels work in Ireland.

Mostly UK public broadcasters don't pay at all to be on Irish EPG. Sky actually has to pay them. Only the Pay TV broadcasters can justify payment to be on Irish EPG.

Sky definately pays for BBC1 NI and BBC2 NI to be on Irish EPG. It's very likely that Sky pays C4 for any Irish EPG placement.

Eventually when large disk PVRs become common, all +1 channels (which are a stunning waste) will go.

Any chance of BBC HD and Channel 4 HD coming on our EPG anytime soon or will we have to wait for freesat hd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

Great thing about using a 3rd party receiver for the FTA/FTV (Using dragon cam and UK card) is that you can have whatever channel order you want. I find I use my technomate now a lot more for watching the channels on 28east.

If by "our" you mean Irish Sky HD, no. Sky would have to pay. It's not likely in the short term. Not till a high proportion of viewers have Sky HD. The penetration of Freesat HD receivers is likely to be slow and low here due to fact that anyone with satellite and an HD Set likely has Sky and "true" HD needs really 1080 lines native with bigger than 50" screen to be compelling advantage. HD on a typical 37" 1366 x768 screen compared with DVD or good SD channel is underwhelming at 8ft viewing distance.

Nothing to stop us from getting a Freesat HD box when there out and dish though is there?

Then we'd have BBC HD, ITV HD and Channel 4 HD and be able to record them too.

Has anyone got a link to a UK store selling the FreeSat boxes with HDD (PVR) option? I can only see the standard FreeSat HD boxes with no mention of internal HDD on the usual high street websites.

Could be wrong, but I don't think the PVR options will be available until the summer.

No I think you're right there. Humax is the primary contender currently for the Freesat PVR

Shall we club together on a minibus outing to Newry/Belfast in August in search of HD PVRs ?

I see the the Irish versions on 11565V are still encrypted

Then we'd have BBC HD, ITV HD and Channel 4 HD and be able to record them too.

Channel 4 HD is not available on Freesat.
