Someone is asking me to look into software that would backup files on one hard drive to another (external) is there anything like that available or whats the best option. This would be a Dell PC so I doubt raid would be a better/cheaper option. Any ideas

I use Acronis True Image but there are other cheaper (and even free !) apps around . I cant recommend any of them as I haven't used them though ....

    Allway Sync

Using it for some time now & can't fault it.

ntbackup doesn't do compression , but you can compress the NTFS folder it goes too,

The NT3/NT4 versions only worked with Tape, but the windows 2000 and later versions are a complete pig if you are trying to run a scheduled backup to tape.

If just data files then look at robocopy too for synchronising folders, synchtoy is fine for small stuff - both mean you can jus browse the folders , most backup apps mean you have to restroe to see the files.

if using XP there is an ftedit utility that might be able to software mirror drives, but never been brave enough to try it
