Taking Husband's Name

    Afternoon all.
I hope I'm posting this in the right section. I did a bit of a search, but couldn't find anything.
We got married last May, and my wife has always said she was going to take my name. She never got around to it though...until now!
We've recently found out we're going to have a baby, and she wants to get the name thing sorted before the baby is born.

Does anyone know where we go from here?
What forms are needed, if any?
    Where do we go?
    Who do we talk to?

Basically we haven't a notion what to do. She doesn't want to ask her family/friends as they think she's already done it, and she's kinda embarrassed that she hasn't.:o

Thanks in advance guys and gals.

P.S. We're in Cork, if that makes any difference.

Dont worry, Im sure it can be all sorted out. Here is a link for the registrar of births deaths and marraiges for the country. You should find cork on there. You should give them a quick call and ask what you should bring down. Once you are married, and have your married cert - she could officially start using her married name. I.e phoning the banks, mortgage lenders and whoever else she needs to, and notify them of the change.

Double check all of this with them. When the baby is born you are given forms at the hosp to fill in the babies name, and I would just enter your surname. Once your sig is on it all is official.

Tell the Mrs to get a move on :p

In Ireland you are legally allowed to use whatever the hell name you like. You just have to start using it.

In practice there are some complications with this but in the case of a woman taking her husband's name it's quite simple. In most cases she just have to use it, for a new passport she just has to show her marriage license and for things like bank accounts she can request a name change which will be a lot easier if she again provides a copy of her marriage certificate.

Nothing else needs to be done.
