How to approach newspapers for work...

Just wondering if anyone has any experience in this area. Im hoping to get work from local, maybe national newspapers but am not quite sure how to approach them. Would I need a hard copy of my portfolio or would an online one do. Would it be better to work through an agency? And if you do get work, where would you stand with regards to copyright? Do you have to hand over complete copyright of any work you do for the publication in question or would you come to some sort of an agreement with them regarding copyright ownership. A lot of questions, I know, but im hoping to gain an understanding of how things work and how best to go about things without selling myself short. Much appreciated. :)
