looking for general information on digital slr's

im looking to pick up on an old hobby, photography, but dont know very much about digital cameras.
all my prior experience was gained on film format cameras. as im looking to buy a digital slr i felt it best to educate myself before parting with my hard earned cash.

my interests are primarily sport, showjumping and motorsports so im looking for something that is capable of multi exposure, auto focus that will give CRISP results at distance, eg.a showjumpers face taken from distance as their horse jumps a fence...the two cameras im considering at the moment are the Nikon D300 and the Canon 40D.

first of all id like someone to explain why there is such a large price difference between what are supposed to be equivelent cameras!!

second, while im pretty sure that both cameras will be capable of the results im looking for, im not sure of the best kind of lenses to buy with the camera.
there is again an enormous difference in price between what appears to be very similar lenses! by that i mean two lenses of very similar focal ranges and f stop ranges can vary in price by several hundred euro's, and id really like someone to explain the various lense types, the differences between them and why is there so big a price difference between them as described above??

Any information and or help given will be really appriciated

    Hi Eddie, welcome to Boards,

Theres loads of info and links to good sites in the sticky/FAQ, I,m sur youv'e had a look there already...

I have no intention of getting into a Canon v Nikon battle, both are fine cameras, as for the lenses I think you will find that most of the diference will be accounted for by the quality of the glass, weather sealing, IS/VR, and even plain old marketing.

Best of luck with your new purchase.
