I'd be very interested if anyone know this one...
Does anyone know what is in Darren Clarke's or Padraig Harrington's golf bag?

    Harrington's bag
DRIVER - Wilson Staff Pd5, 7.5 degrees of loft with Grafalloy ProLite 35x shaft, 45 1/4 inches, tipped one inch.
Golf Pride victory grips on all clubs, (one wrap of tape).
"The reason for the low loft on my driver is that its lets me hit up on the ball to launch it with less spin!"
Woods - Big Bertha 3+ and a Steelhead Plus 5 wood. He also has a Wilson Staff FwS 5 wood (new model).
    " If the par 5's are over water I'll carry my 5 wood - If there's wind I'll carry a 2 iron!"
Irons - Wison Staff Pi5, 3 iron through PW, one degree upright. Royal Precision Rifle Flighted Steel Shafts 7.2
" I could play with softer shafts but am concerned with ball flight in the wind!"
Putter - Wilson Staff Kc4 putter with interchangable plates.
"I have different looking plates so that if I want a new look I don't have to change putter!"
    Ball - Titleist Pro v1x
"Flavour of the day at the moment! - I like it"

    Clarke's bag
My Driver is the TaylorMade Burner with 8.5 degrees of loft tweaked to 8.75 degrees specially for me. It has a Taylormade RE-AX TP 90 Driver Shaft and is 1/4" longer than standard.

The Three Wood is a TaylorMade Burner TP Fairway Wood with 13 degrees loft with a Graphite Design YS-9 Fairway Wood Shaft.

The Five Wood is the TaylorMade Burner TP Fairway Wood with 15 degrees loft with a Graphite Deisgn P/T Fairway Wood Shaft.

My Irons are TaylorMade rac TP Forged irons with Rifle 7.0 Tour High Shafts that are also 1/4" longer than standard.

Wedges - Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled 56 and 60 degree.

I'm currently using a Scotty Cameron Red X putter.

The ball I'm using is the Taylormade TP Red.LDP

What does Padraig mean when he says his driver is "tipped one inch"?

Always find the little nick-nacks players have in their bags is very interesting, more so even than the clubs they use - they have a "What's in the Bag?" feature in Golf Digest usually and it's always a good read.

My 3 wood has been tipped.... found this on golfwrx.com before about tipping
It means that the shaft has been trimmed at the tip (i.e. the clubhead end) to make it play to a desired flex. Most shafts are tip-trimmed to some degree to get them to play to a desired flex, depending upon the clubhead they are being fitted to, but it is possible (and quite common) to adjust the flex by varying the amount that is trimmed.

'Tipping' a shaft generally refers to the act of removing more tip material than is generally specified in order to make the shaft play stiffer than the expected flex. If a shaft is described as 'tipped' it generally is a reference to the extra amount of tip material removed over that which would be considered 'normal.'

Tipping a shaft generally removes inconsistencies in the shaft as far as i know. Although your shaft says stiff, how stiff it is can vary i think. Tipping sorts that out.

That's how i perceived it anyway.

thats not really it, as licksy posted, if you trim the tip of the shaft back, the leverage at the hosel is lessened and you get less flex.

It doesn't do anything else. Splining or Puring may be what you are thinking of Graeme?

You're absolutely right... i'm thinking of puring! was reading something on it there recently. Should have paid more attention!!

Thanks Madds for putting that up. It was what I was looking for.

Hmm, interesting..., so is tipping actually cutting the shaft or milling it down at the desired diameter at the clubhead end?? in other words, if I want 1" tipped does that mean the last inch is cut off or is it just narrowed down with a lathe or something?.... and how can they do that with graphite shafts? is it done by the manufacturers at source?

Oh.......BTW I must mention, that being a six foot tall golfer, that I find all of the regular sold new big drivers (Taylormade Burner, Cobra LD speed, Ping G10 etc) very short shafted, now that's probably because of the huge heads and the shaft just seems shorter, but do any 6ft plus golfers that are posting prefer a longer shaft?? PS: remember Jarmo Sandelin? Padraig Harrington is slightly over 6ft, like Darren.

6ft isn't that tall to be honest mate. I wouldn't woory about it. I'm 6'4" and use a standard length driver.

Thats interesting, at 6'4 surely you should have one inch longer shafts....maybe i'l start a new thread on this one to get opinions??

I know Harrington does not use a Wilson driver

Played Luttrellstown on Sat (I was brutal course was great) but interestingly Harrington was down there practising. Saw him play a hole parallel to ours and he was poetry in motion!

Hmmm. Well I do have 3/4 of an inch on my irons. And my putter is 36". But I reckon when it gets to drivers there's no need to add anything. They're hard enough to control with out making them longer!!!
