    I use a presonus inspire

    http://www.presonus.com/products/Detail.aspx?ProductId=7

It has Two inputs (XLR and 7mm jacks), handy graphic user interface for setting levels, connects directly to your firewire connection on your PC.

It also comes with Cubase LE for some simple home recording. You should be able to get one on ebay for 100- 200e.

Go on Thomann and look for home recording boxes etc. Find any one that meets the requirements and seems to suit best. You need a mic input and an instrument input. The low end stuff is all much of a muchness quality wise. Mackie, Alesis, Presonus etc.

Avoid Digidesign unless you specifically want Protools. You're paying more because they all come with a Protools LE licence.

And generally avoid Firewire if it's a PC, they seem far more prone to issues than USB or PCI type interfaces. Firewire likes Macs a lot more.
