Laptop battery problem

    Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 for about last 2 years now. I recently done a dissertation and left the laptop plugged into the power supply for a number of weeks while doing it. Now the battery won't last pi**in time. It shuts itself down after about 5-10mins when the "battery power properties - alarm" is set. When i disable it, it can last up to 90mins but it shuts down directly and i lose my work. There is also nearly always the red X on the battery symbol down the right beside the time...

Basically, is there any way i can recalibrate the battery?

    Thanks
    B

Batteries degrade over time, if you ask me 2 years is pretty good going, the only thing you can do is buy a new battery. Try ebay

The battery is fine, its just the Power Meter thinks there is less in it than there is...

I have charged it and left it run out of charge a few times and this seems to make a little better but still not what i was hoping for.

well 2 years is a really good run for a battery. you had to expect it was going to die, even sooner than that. Just get a new spare: keep the one you have for when you're plugged in (so when you lse power you can save your work and shut down etc) and keep the new spare for your mobile-y bits.

wouldn't worry too much about it tbh.

each time you discharge it and recharge it you are eating away it's life a little more, the meter will sync by itself maybe

Of course the other obvious way to get more life out of your battery is to quit using it: if your machine is plugged in and your charge is 100%, then eject the battery until you need it. The computer isnt sending a whole lot of energy between the computer and the battery when its charged but its enough where its more ideal to have it disconnected when you arent using it. If you have 1 bad battery its great as a 'shutdown' supply (when power goes out youll be given a bit to finish up what you were doing) but if you only have one make sure it stays good. Losing one session of work to a power outtage is much less hassle than killing your battery.
