Actually Hofmann did think it increased longevity. AFAIK there have been studies showing that psiliocybin inceased the lifespan of rodents by a high %.

And these effects are on threshold doses. Psilocybin and LSD are taken by clusterheadache sufferers AKA suicide headaches. It can bring complete relief for many months, while current drugs for the condition last only per episode and cost a fortune. Many cannot afford it and end up killing themselves, hence the name.
