Ok , posting this on behalf of a friend who cant for the love of god get gta4 working, Hes got an american 60 gb ps3 and whenever he tries to start up gta he gets some message about that his display settings are off, He rang up sony and they said if he gets a hd tv hel be sorted.

Now i figure that although i know its not exactlty the same thing that in theory a computer moniter should work right? So anyway what is the easyst way to connect a ps3 to a moniter.....that is assuming that this idea will work.

As this is gta4 speed is an issue here people, hes gone through 60 fags today already in anger.

    Thanks in advance lads. cheers.

Depends on the monitor... if it has DVI, then you can get a HDMI-to-DVI cable and hook it up that way... using either the scart or optical audio to whatever speakers.
This is my setup at the moment, exept I've got the scart L/R audio from the PS3 going into my PC's Line-in and out through the soundcard into my headphones, so I can control the volume, bass-boost and all that.

If the monitor is an older CRT with just a VGA connection, then I'm not sure what you can do. :/
Does he have 3 or 4 hundred quid for a new LCD monitor? :)

Nope thats the problem, tried taking out a bank overdraft and everything, the screen he has is old but hes got a new enough laptop, the inputs it has are the following:

    3 x USB 2.0 - USB 2.0, 1 x Modem - RJ-11, 1 x Ethernet - RJ-45, 1 x Display / video - VGA, 1 x Expansion, 1 x IEEE 1394 (FireWire), 1 x S-Video, 1 x Consumer IR, 2 x Headphones, 1 x Microphone

anything he can muster with those and some form of bastardised adaptor cable?

He can't do anything with that laptop. Anything video related in that laptop is output only, he can't input video in the laptop... unless he uses a video capture card...

He can also connect the PS3 to a VGA monitor using a HD Fury adapter... bloody expensive though. This thing strips HDCP from the signal... Best pic quality available. Or he could use a component cable and a component to VGA box... He would spend a little less that with the HD Fury route... still the HD Fury is the way to go imho.

    Hi Patricide,

Unless your friend is willing to shell out for either a new television or computer monitor then there is nothing he can do. The video connections on his laptop are for output only and do not accept a video in signal. You need a computer monitor that has HDCP support, so if it's an older monitor it is unlikely to have this.

EDIT: Whoops beaten to it by Isamu_Dyson. :)

Is this definitely a HDCP problem? I was under the impression (perhaps incorrectly) that HDCP is only used with Blu-Ray films?

HDCP is used for games also on PS3 when connected to monitor using DVI or HDMI.

Why doesn't your friend try reseting his display settings of his US PS3?
Turn off PS3, then hold down the power button for 10 seconds until 2 beeps are heard.
His PS3 will then auto-detect the optimal resolution settings for type of connection used.

Or you could buy an american copy of the game?

The problem isnt your ps3 , its the game (i'd say) If you put a region free DVD into your friends PS3 thats in the pal format it will give the exact same error. So if you got a Ntsc copy of the game it should be fine.

EDIT: The problem is that the american Ps3 wont accept displaying anything thats in Pal format, all games up to this had both pal and ntsc on them.

Im sure some people here have ordered it off videogamesplus.ca and maybe someone would be kind enough to do a straight swap. If not, sell it on adverts and buy a new one off the above mentioned website. If you ordered tonight you'd have it monday (more than likely). €40 + €5 delivary... alot cheaper than a new tv

Also EDIT: Thank god I've a HDTV.. i would have been stung by this too
