Darkroom course

    Hi all,

A while ago I was looking at the idea of using film again, and getting into developing my own b&w film. Somebody suggested doing a darkroom course to get the basics.

Well last weekend I did a 1 day intro course with Peter from FPWorkshops (www.fpworkshops.com). Peter posts here as thefizz.

I have to say it was an excellent course, gave a great intro to using a darkroom, we got to develop a roll of film in the morning, make some prints from an old roll I had, then in the afternoon make some more prints from the roll I'd done in the morning.

Peter has a great understanding of the subject, and seems to have infinite patience, even with my bungling attempts!

Anyway, generally, I'd recommend everybody to do a darkroom course, it gives you a much better understanding of the mechanics of producing a photograph (I now know that dodging and burning wasn't invented with Photoshop!). And if you're considering a course, I couldn't recommend fpworkshops any more highly!

Well hopefully I'll soon be producing enough decent film shots to start posting some here!

    Cheers

    des

Cheers for the info. How much was it if you don't mind me asking?

If you can get in to any of the workshops by Les McLean, Tim Rudman or Charlie Waite then go for it, they can only be brilliant. I have not attended any but am familiar with their work and their books. These guys are masters and well worth the money at around €170 or so for the workshops. I'm not familiar with Brian McIlvenny, but if the rest of the list is the setting the standard then he has to be good.
I see Charlie Waite is in Portlaoise on 10th of December for €20, well worth it to hear this guy talk about his work. It's a pity it's on a wednesday though, I'd never get there in time after work.
    Check out the website.

Glad you enjoyed it Des, thanks for the feedback.

Sorry I could only get Charlie Waite midweek, I would have loved to book him for an entire saturday but the man is so busy, I took the midweek.

Theres a few people taking a half day for the trip [3.5 hours drive] so I reckon it will be worthwhile but then I'm a bit biased  don't mind me. I've seen CW talk before in Belfast and he was just superb.
