So I am going unregged for this, I work in famous company today that announced losses today in one of their depts . I have been told I have to go by November, my question is now what do I do between now and then, sit back relax??

What are the rules with this?

The only comment I can make here is that I have witnessed this situation often over the last 20 + years.

In many cases it can be the best thing that ever happens to you career.

You and approx 249 other people if Im guessing right. I was made redundant on new years eve after 7.5 years, So far it has been the best thing to happen. Now earning 60% more than before Christmas, Keep the chin up, It WILL work out OK. Depending on how much you will receive money wise will answer your question on should you relax and start looking for work. If they will pay you off to go anytime between now and November, then start looking for work, if not, stay were you are. You will get €197.50 a week in November to keep you going until you find work.

It's part of corporate life. The good news is now you have to pursue something new and you have plenty of notice.

If you want to stay in the company and try to move else where then do your job to a capable standard as anyone interviewing you will ask your boss.

Otherwise just start looking else where and make that your priority (Turn up to work and so on).

Hope it works out for you. I used to work for Gateway Computers and know exactly what it feels like to be made redundant.

I was lucky that at the time finding alternate employment was fairly easy in Ireland. I'm not so sure the same can be said today.

ONE thing is for damn sure- finding work while still employed is easier than on the dole - though most people will respect your bad luck being made redundant - for a while.

It really depends on what area you work in currently, I'd be sending out CV's left right and centre NOW, I'm certain they will give you time off to go to any interviews that you get as a result given the circumstances.

Being on the dole is f'n depressing, there just no way to sugar coat that..don't think just because you got 6 weeks pay per year worked its all cushy, now is the time to take action.

Do not wait for the axe to fall, get your CV's out there now big time.

Best of luck OP, I really hope you get sorted out with another company quickly.

as other posters said start getting your CV out now, otherwise you are going to be up against 249 or your ex colleagues all going for roughly the same jobs. because of where that certain company is based, a lot of people live in the same areas so they will all be looking for new jobs as close to that area as possible, i.e. south dublin. also becuase everyone comes from the same work background a lot of them will want to stay in the same industry. so basically you will have 250 people looking for that job in that area and you wil find you are all going for the same interviews. get ahead of the posse now.

when gatewas closed you had hundreds of IT sales people looking for IT sales jobs in north county dublin. it was very competivie but there were loads of jobs in that industry then. things are a bit tighter now. start job hunting now.

good luck with it. and dont worry, you will be fine.

    2 things:

    a) how long you being with Dell? would you get redundancy? check your contract for this.

    b) where are you located? big tech support company is moving to Leixlip.

Depending how long you've been there you could get a lot of money tax free in November.

If i was you i would organize my CV and send it out in August saying you can start in November on whatever date you get your redundancy.

Your current employer will let you go to interviews answer the phone etc when looking for a new job.

What i would not do is pass up on this tax free lump sum if its a significant amount. If you leave before your redundancy date you get nothing.

Take the money, relax and make your efforts for a new job around your redundancy date or alternatively take that trip to Oz or whatever if you ever thought you wanted to travel. You'll be well funded :)
