New Sports Hall

Hi all, haven't been here in a while so apologies if this has been discussed already .............

Anyone know the story on the new sports hall? Been told that its been handed over to an external party outside the college. Does this mean that we lose the hall and facilities to public bookings / exams / grads etc again? Just like the old hall?

In the club I'm in we are absolutly dependent on the hall but have often lost it to birthday parties, external bookings superseeding ours, teddy bear hospitals etc - most of the time this happens without us being contacted and we find out when we turn up for our regular training .

    Anyone know anything?

Do you mean the new sports center beside the bridge or Aras na MacLeinn hall?

I think the "New" part gives you your answer;)

Well the reason I ask is because once the new sports center is open there will be construction work done on Aras na Mac Leinn to turn it into some sort of an arts and cultural building as far as I know aimed for use primarily by clubs and societies.

If your club uses the hall that often you should probably get your club captain to take a look into what the situation will be when the new sports center opens. The hall in Aras na Mac Leinn may or may not be still there in a couple of months so you might have to use the new sports center.

On another note, I would have thought that college clubs have priority over the hall over non college related activities such as birthday parties (exams I can understand). Whats the story?

Id advise you to get in touch with student services - there is a woman there who is very helpful and supportive of students. I forget her name now but she currently deals with issues arising from the sports hall etc.

Sports in NUIG are not given the proper attention. The Sports and recreation union has lost any clout it once had and isnt involved in decisions which affect sports clubs in the college.

The new clubs captain Joe McGill from Archery seems to be on the ball, and being from an indoor club background id imagine that access to the new hall will be one of his priorities. It'll be a big challenge though as there is a lack of support for clubs when they get in the way of the universities plans. Best of luck to him, he cant possibly be worse than the last two clubs captains.

Might be worth getting in touch with him and raising the issue. Might be worth your while either getting elected yourself/someone else as an indoor club rep in september to the Sports and recreation union or failing that its normally possible to get coopted onto it.

If you want to pursue the issue, Greg Power in Buildings would be a good one to contact

Thanks all. Yup, sports in NUIG really needs a boot somewhere. We have good facilities and excellent athletes but not the systems in place to give them what they need to really push the envelope. There are some exceptions, but the talent pool is far larger than the support.

I'm from the Archery club and Joes a good friend of mine. You sure he is the clubs captain? If he is I don't think he knows it!

My mistake, must have got confused with him winning the SU best club individual award.... im going to blame it being exam time :)

The fact that there wasnt any clubs captain elected again this year says it all, anybody who is any good and involved in the sports clubs is too busy trying to develop their own clubs to be bothered with the SU and there is no leadership coming from the SU or the university.
