quick question about having 3 boxes

i'm getting sky+ installed this week. rang up pretending that I was going to cancel and I got it for €69 with free install. I already have 2 boxes on a multi-room sub.

Basically I was thinking of using a UK address and getting my hands on the UK card, which will give me the UK EPG? am i right?

Then sticking this in the now "3rd" box, that i won't be using as I have only 2 TV sets. then say if ther eis something on Five that I want to see, i'll just pull the cable out of the box with my normal Irish Card in it and switch it into the UK box.

    Jesus I've confused myself.........

    So my setup will be:

Downstair Main TV : Sky + ( Irish card + EPG)
Upstairs TV : Box 1 (Irish card + epg)
    Box 2 ( UK Card + EPG)

Is this workable? or even worth it?

It's workable, but if you leave one of the boxes unplugged for a long time the encrypted channels will scramble, and you'll have to wait several hours for them to come back once you plug the box back in.

Better to run a second cable to the upstairs TV and leave both boxes plugged in all the time. You should have a spare connection on the dish for this if you are getting Sky+ installed. If you are using a local installer he will probably do this at installation time for you, but might charge extra. I don't know if Sky will do this for you if you order direct.

I have a similar setup myself however I have the UK box on the same TV as the Sky HD box. I have three of the four outputs from the dish going to the living room and the fourth going to the bedroom.

The advantage of this is that there is no remote control conflicts as Sky HD (and Sky+) use different remote signals to the regular sky box. If you have the two standard sky boxes together they will both respond to the remote controls of each other.

Just a question- you mention that standard boxes can conflict, and SKY+ and HD won't conflict....so will SKY+ and a Multiroom {being a standard box} conflict also??? As that is the setup I hope to get in.:o

its a bit of a job running a second cable up to the box upstairs. but sure I could do that bit myself in time.

beginning to think I'll keep the FTA box downstairs though, its mainly for the extra BBC channels and BBC radio that I want it. Bonus will be geting Five, which is showing new series of House atm.

At least I know the idea is workable, now I just need to get my hands on a UK FTA card

No, you only get the remote conflict if the two boxes are in the same room. The original poster was going to have two standard digiboxes in one room (one with an Irish sub and one with a FTV card for Five and the extra BBC/ITV channels on the EPG.
