Wedding venue refused!!!

    Hi all,

I just found out that our wedding venue has been refused by the powers that be in the civil service. As you might have guessed, we were hoping to have a civil ceremony, and the venue was to be a well known Dublin restaurant, which would then cater for us after the ceremony.

The room was perfect and the venue was perfect and the manager had told us that getting the venue approved should not be a problem as they had already had a wedding ceremony there. We were glad to hear this as it took us a long time to find the venue initially.

Today we get a call explaining that the venue has been rejected and the reason is lack of disabled access. We argued that there are no disabled people on our small guest list. We were told that this didn't matter and that by law all weddings had to be open to all the public and as such a disabled person may decide to attend and this needs to be catered for. I don't know why it is that weddings are supposed to be open to all, but it sounds like archaic nonsense on the face of it.

I am so angry. This sounds to me like utterly ridiculous bureacracy and it has had the effect of completely wrecking our plans, and my fiance's feelings. To make matters worse, they took so long to come to this silly conclusion that we are now left with 5 months to go and we must find another venue (with disabled access!) so that none of the other bookings we have made fall through. When and if we do find that venue- it will also be subject to the same nonsensical and lenghty approval process.

So my two questions to the world are these:
    1) Am I the only one who thinks this is absolutely farcical?
    2) Can anyone suggest a venue in Dublin city centre that won't be booked already for October and that is suitable for a wedding ceremony, but yet can still accommodate the disabled people who will definitely not be in attendance?!?

ps. please note I hope nothing I have said above is deemed offensive in any way to anyone with a disability. I recognise the need for disabled access in all public places. It's just that I don't think this need applies in this instance for our humble wedding, when we know in advance there will be no attendees requiring disabled access.

I can answer number 1 in saying that I agree it's beyond ridiculous. I really can't think of a suitable restaurant. Could you gve us an idea of how many people you are having and what you're looking for in a venue food wise etc?

    Hi Bagheera-

Thanks for your reply. I guess we would be looking at about 40 to 60 people depending on cost. (ie. 40 if it is expensive, 60 if it is more affordable).

We are looking for a reasonable but reputable restaurant/hotel, with a private room for the ceremony and a private room for the meal. After the ceremony, we would love to be able to get some nice pics outdoors close by while our guests have a drink. The last venue was almost perfect in this regard because it was overlooking St.Stephen's Green.

Quite a few things to consider I know! But if you have a suggestion I'd be grateful. Many thanks.

    d :)
