Ageism in the workplace

    Yep, that's illegal alright.

Realistically there is nothing you can do. Sure, they can remove that from the advert, but you can be sure they still won't give the job to an 18 or 19 year old.

Yeah that is definitely ageism. They could have just put 'relevant experience required' and used that as an excuse to exclude teenagers.

I wonder what people would think if a job advert said something like; ”for under 40's only”. At the end of the day employers do what they want, if it's illegal then there are ways of ‘sugar-coating’ that fact.

Something which you might find interesting:

The word "mature" in a job advert means they are not willing to employ a young person.
The phrase "may require heavy lifting" means they are not willing to employ a female.

Yeah but "young" and "mature" are subjective? Do you mean "young" as in 18? Or 26?
I remember going for a job at a newspaper two years ago when I was 28 which I thought would be mature enough for the job in question. A 41-year-old got it though so in that case she was obviously the mature one and I was the young one.

I use to work in HR and we would never use the word mature - we woudl up the number of years experience.

Its okay to say heavy lifting required if it is required and yes you will get more male appliants.

A drugs detox clinic woud need male or female to accompany clients to the bathroom for the weekly urine test.

When we needed a male we advetised for Porters and when we needed females we advertsed for Attendants - worked every time.
