So this coming Friday, me and my mates who go the Shels games are going to Limerick and it's our first "Unusual beer trip" which I feel will turn into an annual event.:D Anyway I need a beer which I wouldn't usually drink the likes of Tuborg, Heineken, Miller or Bud, or for that matter that isn't drunk on the away trips so include the usuals on the list Harp, Dutch Gold, Bulmers, etc... I'm looking for unusual but cheap enough for a good few cans/bottles (it's a long oul trip to Limerick on a Friday afternoon/evening).

    Suggestions?

London pride is usually a good choices are is generally available in good off licenses

Sierra Nevada pale ale is also another good choice

Shepherd Neame's range are also good (Spitfire, Bishop fingers etc)

If you like wheat beers schofferhofer/ paulaner are also good, but you may want a glass for these

    enjoy

You can get Budvar and Newkie Brown in cans easily enough. Superquinn for the former; Dunnes for the latter.

    Not cheap but...

Polish beers get my vote nowadays

    In order of preference

    Okocim, Zwiec, Tyskie, Varka (strong)

    smashing beers

    rgds

Another vote for London Pride, can be got in a growing selection of offies, very tasty. The same company Fuller, also do an ale called ESB, it's great stuff but can be difficult to get. Both go down smooth, and tend to not give you a "head" the next morning.

Samuel Adams is a nice choice, very popular in the states, and a lot of Tescos are stocking it now.
Samuel Adams Black lagar is another great choice. Stocked in Redmonds of Ranelagh, Molloys, O'Briens. Its a black beer, nearly the same colour as Guinness, not too gassy, unusual taste, but a nice taste, kind of sweet with a long finish.

Hobgoblin. That stuff is horrible unless it's in one of those big glasses.:D

Has anyone tried Moosehead Beer? Seen a sign for it in my local offo and seems very unusual, well the name does anyway.

I have. It's not very interesting: another dull pale lager. Lawnmower beer.

    What glasses?

noting particular different about that, standard mantra for light lager across the world, high percentage of rice/maize/ fructose syrup wave some hops near the boiling wort

canoe sex beer is another good one

+1 for both the Fuller's beers, I especially love London Pride.

Don't know if I'd be drinking it on an away football trip though, tbh. It doesn't come in cans, and I'd never drink it straight from the bottle.

Tesco do it though, €2.49 for a 500ml bottle. Very reasonable imo.

Most of the offies mentioned will have a good range of Fuller's beers, including the ESB and the Honey one, both of which are good brews.

Definitely a +1 for the SA Black Lager. I got a six pack for a recent night in, along with some Tyskie.

The SA was delish, I have to say. I got it in a Molloy's, I hadn't seen it anywhere before that, and I'd had a hankering for some black lager/beer to replace Monteith's Black from NZ, which I can't get here, they don't export to here

But Gav,, You've never heard of Moosehead?

I wouldn't be too fussed with it tbh, it's just another generic North American beer, imo.

London pride, Sierra Nevada pale, Schofferhofer, Paulaner, Okocim, Zwiec, Tyskie, Varka, Moosehead, SA Black Lager, Budvar and Newkie Brown.

Anyone want to add to my shopping list. My decision will go on the cheapest.:D

Well I've seen it in cans over here (England that is) so maybe it hasn't made its way over yet. Interestingly its one of the few ales I prefer from bottle than cask
Hobgoblin. That stuff is horrible unless it's in one of those big glasses.
Ah quiet now! Hobgoblin is lovely:p

    mmmmmmm beer!!:D

So OP if you're looking for cheap and cheerful and not too ordinary, why not pick up a pick up a p...p....pratzky (cans) or premium pils (Lidl 6 500ml bottles for €6.99!!)

Otherwise can't go too wrong with Staropramen, Budvar and the like or maybe try a Leffe Blonde...NOT Brun (mind blower!!) (bit of a clovey flavour but me likes!)

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,974 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Leffe Brune is a weak and simpering child compared to Leffe 9°, not to turn this into a pissing contest or anything...

Speaking of cheap beer, Tesco's €2 Paulaner is back, in Jervis at any rate, alongside London Pride for €2.19.

Pratzky isn't unusual and it's way to sweet for a beer aswell.

What do people think of Krombacher?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,974 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

It's not unusual either: another pale lager. Decently done, as the Germans do, but fairly indistinguishable from dozens of other beers of the same sort.

    what about some Aventinus_Bock

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,974 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

The OP was looking for cheap, Oblivious. While Aventinus is certainly great value, it's not exactly cheap.

Indeed, no extra cash this weekend as GTA:IV will be purchased on Friday aswell, being an unemployed student doesn't help either.:D

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,974 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Bottle of Aventinus and three straws. At 8.2% ABV there's enough alcohol there to go round.

I would suspect they are 500ml bottles

So I've got some Okocim, Bitburger and Krombacher and will probably pick up some Moosehead tomorrow as it's on a special in the local offo. Them 3 beers seem unusual enough for me and they all taste decent especially Okocim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,389 ✭✭✭cianclarke

Have a bottle of Bitburger infront of me now, E1 in Devaneys Rathmines. :D
Erdinger (white label), Pauliner - both wheat beers are worth trying.
After that, how adventurous do you want to get? What do you want to try? Chimay, the blue one, is quite nice - it's 8% or so, and comes in a small chubby bottle.
Brahma is a nice Brazillian beer, not overly distinctive though..
Desperados is an... Er, interesting... Tequilla beer.
Porterhouse has a huge selection of stuff - some interesting girlie alcopop-ish beers.

    €1 I paid like 2 something for a bottle.

Girlie beers, who do you think I am.:D

if you want a really nice beer, at a decent price, then try Eichbaum, its a 'super forte' (extra strong) German beer, you'll pick it up for around €1.80 a can.
Its strong but has a super flavour.

    canned beer?
    pffffft!

Actually are a better packaging for beer, as they are full resistant to oxygen and light

but you cant naturally condition in a can
