Where are they? Statistically speaking, there has to be at least one in each club no? Will it ever be 'ok' for them to come out?

There was one who came out and then committed suicide a few years later, Justin Fashanu was his name. There are rumours of others like Graeme Le Saux but nothing 100% confirmed.

Probably not no. Football is commonly associated with (dons man voice) blokey blokes. And most of them will never accept homosexuality. Linkage, interesting snippet.

    Edit:// Added link.

Graeme Le Sauxs only "sin" was having a brain and reading the Guardian before that sort of thing was seen as progressive rather than ghey.

    Mike.

What are you waiting for, tabloid headlines any time a footballer is openly gay? I don't know much about football but maybe (hopefully) we've reached the point where a footballer can be openly gay and not have the whole world stop.

There's probably plenty of gay footballers who are open about it with their friends and team mates but no one gives enough of a toss for the whole world to know

A gay guys fav position to play in Rugby Is the No 8 at the back of the pack with his head wedged among all that ass.

I always preferred to play out on the wing myself.

John O'Shea who plays for Man U / Ireland is gay.

There are gay footballers but people just don't talk about it.

Yeah it was reading about him made me post the thread.
It's mad, the last bastion of masculinity and they're as preened as you can get. You'd think in this day and age it wouldn't be such a big deal.

If there is any then they certainly wouldnt admit it until their playing career
came to an end. Imagine the hell they'd have to go through from the fans
during every game. The taunting and jibes would probably drive them from
    the game.

Also, the thought of entering the box would put them off completely.

If any player were to come out of the closet their lives would be made an absolute misery. Hence the silence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,563 ✭✭✭connundrum

I presume that there are a few, but why would they want to 'come out' as it were. If things are going along swimmingly as it is, why jeopordise things by bringing the spotlight onto yourself.

The whole point is that there are no openly gay footballers and my question was will it ever be ok for them to come out and be such.

Abuse from who? The fans? Media? Management? All of the above? That's mad, society is not as far along as I thought we were.

Statistically one in six men are gay - so nearly four gays play at every match.

I saw a lot of "evidence" on Youtube that C Ronaldo of Man Utd is gay. A lot of "evidence". So, with O'Shea as the other one, that'd pretty much make the Neville bloke and Van der Sar straight :D

Not to sound outrageous, but is it possible gays aren't interested in being a footballer? You know, just like straight men aren't particularly interested in being a nurse or a beautician (or whatever industry gay men like to work in.)

It is okay for them in the public eye I'd say, but imagine the awkwardness in the changing room.

I would be inclined to believe that would reduce the odds alright. That said, there are two kinds. The blokey gays, and the more flamboyant / efemininate (sp?) gays.

You wont catch the flamboyants on the pitch. In the crowed trying to get a glimpse up a short-leg perhaps :D

Worst thing about the Justin Fashanu was the fact that his more famous brother John totally disowned him afterwards. What a prick!

Kinsey was terrible with statistics. Most modern surveys say 2-3%.

Well, if the ignorance and homophobia shown by quite a few posters on this thread are anything to go by, any gay football players (and there are a few - shock horror!!) whould be well advised to stay in the closet.

Rugby is actually a considerably less homophobic sport than football. The biggest problem is the fans - many are pure scummers who are total thick ignorant homophobic bigots and who would not accept, let alone tolerate, an openly gay player.

Yes, it will eventually be possible to be an openly gay professional soccer player, but not for perhaps another generation. The way Justin Fashanu was treated and how his life was destroyed after he came out was totally disgusting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,972 ✭✭✭orestes

Of course there are gay footballers, it would be statistically almost impossible for there not to be a few in any league. 20 teams, each team with say 20 or 25 players (first eleven, reserves, etc.) so that's 400 guys, some of them are bound to be gay.

The problem is football is a very homophobic culture afaik. The abuse they would get from the fans would be a nightmare, other players on their own teams wouldn't be happy about getting changed or showering with them, the media attention would be horrible too. The Fashanu case is the most obvious example.

That Sky show Dream Team did a story-line about a player being gay in the team it's about. All the kind of stuff I mentioned above happened. I don't know much about football so I asked my brother if it would really be that big a deal if a footballer was gay. He looked at me like I was asking what colour the sky is and said "what are you, fukking stupid? It would be worse than that". Pretty sad
