Nokia N95 GPS Voice

    Hi folks,
Got a new N95 8gb yesterday. Very nice. I was playing around with the GPS feature today, works well once it actually finds the satellites. Took me a while to figure out how to get the Navigation working, eventually I figured out I needed to download the nav voice-support - only a lousy 3 day trial on the Nokia site. I thought this would have been included free, or at least a longer trial!

On the nokia site, it appears that once my "3-day trial" is up, I'd need to fork out 50-60 euro per year to keep it... Is there no cheaper alternative?

tell me, does it do "turn by turn" and what maps does your phone have? Also, does it run for free when sat navigating - ie. are there network charges when using it?

Yes, it works turn by turn (in 200 metres turn right, etc etc). Works really well in the brief test I gave it. Seems to take a while to actually find the satellites initially though, and it doesn't work indoors :) Seemed to work fine on the move in the car though.

The maps are pre-loaded on it, and you can get updated ones using Nokia's MapLoader app.

No network charges as long as you explicitly set it not to use the phone network.. So the only charge is for the "voice support" as per my original post.

I learnt this lesson the hard way, I bought the N95 and rang 02 to ask if the GPS was free I guessed there would be charge, the girl from o2 said its free and I asked her to note it on my accoun.

Got my bill in the door and there was like 150 euro worth of data charges on it. ( I was using it to download from sites too :) )

I rang 02 and they confirmed it wasn't for free and said I was miss informed, any way they didn't charge me for the data.

Here is something I found to stop the data charges :

If you open the maps app and click on Options --> Settings --> Network --> Use Network select never this will still allow the GPS to lock on but you won't get data charges, its worked for me so far.

If you want an alternative to the Nokia maps, search for Garmin mobile n95 and there is a post on some sites telling you how to install the softare and get turn by turn for free you will have to search on some forums if you know what I mean.
