Where do you see yourself?

Question for serving Emergency Service members (or wannabe ES members), what do you want out of the job and where do you see yourself in, say, 5 years? As a cop do you want onto a specialist unit investigating serious criminals or as a firefighter do you want to work on the rescue side, as an emt do you want to go on to do rapid response work or obtain higher qualifications?

My own personal experience is that I fancy a crack at either anti-terror policing or serious crime investigations, so a career as a Detective on either Counter Terrorism Command or Serious Crime Directorate seems like the way forward.

Hopefully in 5 years I'll have a nursing degree behind me and a member of An Garda Siochana or the Dublin Fire Brigade, from there we'll play it by ear

I'd like to just become a Garda first!:D But I'd like to get onto a frontline job after a good lot of years gaining experience in uniform.I don't know exactly but I would like to be able to take it directly to the criminal/subversive gangs..so joining a national unit would be something I'd go for.

That being said,I would just like to get as much experience as possible as a uniform Garda(all going well next year when I apply!),then maybe move into community policing for a while.

naive and a few years of real experience will change my view im sure, but-

id like a few years in dublin, get used to dealing with real scum and learn to deal with the worst then after a few years a change i know the eru is a competitive and demanding role but i think id like to try it, then maybe work a few years in an investigative unit maybe drugs with the tools of the eru behind me to help. then as i near 40 head home to the native west build a house get a ddu or divisional drugs job and farm a few cows:)

    cant i dream???

Bring on the criticism of serving members to my naive idealistic views....

SDU CSU ERU and UN duty at some stage. But in 5 years time I might not fancy any of those and go for promotion instead.

Being stuck in traffic every day and seeing cars flying by on a Bus Lane makes me want to join a Traffic Corps.

But in all seriousness, Traffic Corps might be not as glamorous as other units, but it is something I would have interest in. Another area would be a department responsible for cooperation with Police forces in other countries. And because of my background, I would be interested in dealing with immigrant communities as well.

Having said that, I realise that I know way to little about the job to be making any serious plans yet, these are just general ideas I have. One thing I know is, I don't want to be stuck behind a desk, escaping that is one of the reasons I want to join the GS.

Five years from now, Id like to be graduating from Templemore. If I get in that is!! After that, Dectitive, then one of those regional armed response units, and then ERU.

A very simplized view I know! Im sure it wouldnt be that easy but I can dream too right??!! That could all be subject to change after being 'in the job'.

Really depends on where your based. Its not usually considered an area that needs crime investigation experience but more a certain type of person considering your primary role changes from simple policing to becoming more involved with the community and dealing with a lot of things that arent really police matters.

My local compol guys are very good at what they do. Know everyone in the area and get information that no regular unit person would. They also deal a hell of a lot with neighbour disputes as mediators and local activities.

Joe from Family guy need not apply! :p

    CSU = Covert Surveillance Unit.

Thanks Karlito,I don't know why but lately I've taken an interest in Community Policing!Obviously I'd imagine one would need plenty of experience first but I think it would something quite challenging. One of the local Community Garda's working in Moyross is great, the people like him and I always see him driving in and out of there on a regular basis..on and off duty!

Btw,I thought it was the National Surveillance Unit?

Fyr.Fytr: You will have the operation for the tonsolitis in the morning. You will probably be sore afterwards. You may need painkillers.

Patient: Ah sure I'll play by year.

Fyr.Fytr.: There's something wrong with your ear? Someone call a doctor. Never mind I will amputate myself.

Now now Fyr, any Irish courses in Forensics are degrees in Chemistry at the end of the day - nothing mickey mouse about them either.

Yea but its criminal forensics im intrested in the csi stuff.

These courses are more forensic chemistry, biology or forensic and enviromental anaylisis.

Will stick with nursing, considering the moajority of time is spent on placements in hospitals which your payed for. Sounds alright to me, plus an excuse to go to coppers before i join AGS anyway lol

Oh and Dr. Z is my inspiration :p
