I had a NT4 PDC fail on me last week old hardware etc etc. I presumed i could go to server manager and promote the BDC but the BDC is not showing up and the option to promote is greyed out. also no users show up in user manager, yet users can log on and connect to shares on the BDC.
anyone throw any light on whats happening?

Hmm can you build a new BDC and promt the newly built BDC to PDC and see does this work? its worth a shot.

Have you many uses on the Domain

About 50/60 users, what you suggest does seem like my only option all right.
    Thanks

Make sure your BDC is uptodate! Have you any idea if the PDC was running Service Pack 6 or not?

PDC had SP6, as does the BDC

Haven't worked on NT4 for a long time so Im really just guessing\googling

Saying that though, I can't see why we can't figure out the problem.

From a CMD Prompt, type "NET ACCOUNTS" and post results.

I think the option is greyed out because the BDC cannot contact your PDC.

    Also try the following
Under Server Manager. Under the View menu, see if the box is checked for "Show domain members only." Do you see a PDC icon and a BDC icon, should mention something about which is the primary \ secondary

Anything coming up in the event viewer>?

Also do you have the Resource kit tools installed? Check out a tool called "BROWSTAT"
